While I agree that you cannot get all of the illegals out with this new policy it is definitely a deterrent.
Illegals continue to break our laws by showing up unchecked to our shores and taking advantage of the free health care and education without making any significant contribution to our economy besides putting a continued strain on it.
I agree that the fee should either be minimum or nil as most of them are very poor, but we cannot just continue to just ignore them. Something HAS to be put in place to curb or account for the thousands that reside here unknown to us.
While they cannot be arrested at the school, they should NOT continue to attend them unchecked. Isn't this why they come? So how do you stop or control it? By making it less easy to land and reside in our borders 'unchecked'.
I applaud the efforts of the Ministry of Immigration but I still say we left it too long and these persons now have a sense of entitlement. They will not lay down and take this policy easy.
Besides, if they are forced to obtain the passports of their nationality, which they proudly contend they are, then at 18 they cannot say they are 'stateless'.
They should have kept VAT off the utilities. Even the mom and pop stores are passing the costs on the consumer. In one day, the whole Bahamas has gone crazy because we have jacka$$es running our Government.
Oh yes I will be boycotting. That's my right as a consumer. You go ahead and pay your VAT and theirs! What you're gonna do when the rate goes up idiot and they take the price to $15 for a ticket? Just go ahead and keep paying because its just so fair..... fool.
And by the way big assumption that I voted the present idiots in...... A typical.
Abaco has the largest concentration of illegals and there are many places to hide so why warn them or have community meetings. Did they warn us they were pulling up in their 'unsanitary' and 'inhumane' sloop children in tow?
And whose to say there won't be a planned riot or they won't arm themselves since you're going to tell them that you are officially starting roundups... very foolish.
Business owners are using VAT to financially rape their customers. Even if they have to pay VAT on utilities so do their customers. And what recourse do we have? We are not getting a dime of our money back. At least the business owners can apply for a refund. It reeks of greed and nastiness! Boycott Bahamas? No!. Boycott such businesses. If the product or service is not essential, do without or find alternatives. I will be going to potters cay dock for my fruits and vegetables (not super value) and watching my movies online (not galleria)!!
I don't. Since earlier in the year he has been price gorging! I go to his food stores every two weeks and have been watching the prices creep up to almost a dollar to two dollars on most items.... milk, eggs, yogurt, kelloggs raisin bran... just to name a few. I'm down to buying only the very basic items (when I am desperate) and just taking my business elsewhere. I suggest everyone else does the same.
What I don't get is how is it that Cost-Rite and other major retailers/wholesalers are able to pass the savings on to their customers and Mr. Roberts who owns several stores and no doubt also buys in bulk is so adamant about hiking his prices up. It reeks of greed!!
Yes. All of the above comments are right. Super Value has been going crazy for the past few months. Every two weeks when I shop the price goes up on something. Recently Activia Yogurt jumped from $8.99 to $9.99 and now its $10.49. Organic Milk is now over $7.00 and so is Kellogg's Raisin Bran. I've decided to stop giving them most of my business and now shop "where my money can spend". Cost Rite has these items much cheaper. I just don't get it. And VAT 'een reach yet"!
As for Lowe's everything has doubled! Their prices are now insane as well.
Anyone ever visited Texaco/Ribus Independence Drive (near the Town Centre Mall) lately? All of the snacks have doubled.
Why is this happening... and why aren't these prices being regulated?!!!
NIB is no example. Didn't their executives pay themselves huge bonuses from "our" hard-earned money? Whatever became of that situation? In many mind, VAT is just another excuse to rake in more revenue for the Government to continue to go crazy spending. I predict we will go further in the hole and their response will be to go up even higher on the rate.

They need to dispense with all these policies and just make them law. Let's see how QC Fred will deal with it then.

I say do it the right way or go elsewhere.
