Absolutely correct Rony. People always complaining they can't find a job - then government is trying to get rid of the people who have their job - and they complain.

These people are also sending their money out of the country as fast as they make it - except for a few dollars to buy rice and turkey wings. An economy cannot function if there is a vacuum cleaner attached to it sucking the money out. Money needs to circulate among the people.

People say they have no money and no jobs. But according to most of the comments on here - that's the way they like it.

The Government should sell BEC and ship all the equipment including generators, transformers, switches, computers and the whole lot to another country (like Dominica or Honduras or somewhere) - I mean physically ship them out.

Then give ALL the money proceeds from the sale to be equally divided among ALL the BEC workers.

Then it will all be over with. They will have gotten everything that is gottable (new word) - and they along with the rest of us can start burning lamp - and then figure out some other way that we can be even more stupid in the future.

The airports and hotels can run on generator - if not, they can just close.

You are wrong. The police always say "nobody has filed a complaint" whenever anythings happens. Somebody has to physically go in and sign a complaint form for them to act on.

I worked with Dr. Nottage in the CDR and I believe he has the best for the Bahamas at heart. People need to realize too that politicians have MANY restrictions in what they can do and say. One glaring example, that I bet a lot of people do not realize, is that they SELDOM get Sundays and/or Saturdays off to rest. Somebody is always getting buried in their constituency and they are expected to show up to pay their respects. This takes away from their rest time and their ability to perform at 100%. It also takes away from phone time, e-mail time, and work time. But if they didn't show up - boy they would catch hell. This is just ONE example of how the people WANT one thing from politicians but DEMAND something else.

What it has to do with them - is she is saying that the PM's security detail should have been left for the PM. She was a minister under Ingraham - and so she should be able to comment as to whether Ingraham ever had the policy of leaving his detail with his DPM while he was away. I would be that he did NOT. The opposition (of either party) is always good at saying what should be done - but they never do it while they are in power.

For example, the PLP was upset when Hannah-Martin was thrown out of the House for speaking out of turn - but like Ingraham said those were the Rules that he found in place. He did not change them, and now that PLP is back in power they have not changed them either. They like being able to throw the opposition out, and so does the FNM. Neither wants democracy - only power.

So in this Butler is just talking nonsense because Ingraham did not leave his detail for the DPM and when she becomes Prime Minister in 2017 she will not leave it either.

john33xyz says...

Perhaps she can give exact dates when Ingraham was out of the country and his DPM was given the PM's security detail? I'm sure the same thing happened back then.

I've always wondered whether our Cabinet really makes these decision or if they are FORCED to keep increasing borrowing just to keep up the high leverage that other countries have over our "independent" butts.

Do they send a message to Cabinet something like "borrow another 300 million, or we will issue a travel warning, or we will stop stamping your passports for six months but instead 6 days, or we will make it harder for your ships to come in and out of Port to get your food and lumber"

Something like that. In other words we are already in too deep and just have to dance to the massa's tune?

Does July 10th really mean anything? How can it when everything you eat and drink and live with comes from another country?

Children today are born into slavery in the Bahamas. There are about 300 thousand people here and this new loan of 300 million means one thousand dollars more per head on top of what is already owed.

Maybe the opposition party could keep up public pressure and demand that the Government write and mail a personal letter (with the name and address) to every single Bahamian in this country - directly informing them in writing that a thousand dollars has just been added to the 15 thousand that they already owe, so that now they are in debt $16,000. It would only cost a few thousand dollars to do this, so why not? At least it will show some respect.

I just hope that the VAT has very few exemptions. AND it especially NEEDS to apply to ALL bread-basket items - and allow for their price to rise that much above price-control levels.

There are WAY too many breaks for the poor - and that is why we have more of them. A new food distribution group has formed in Nassau which will provide soup kitchens for the poor - so they do not starve. I agree with that. We are civilized and so we should not have people starving on the streets.

But the price of baby food, diapers, bread, rice, grits etc. needs to go up. Too many "poor people" are sending their money out of the country by way of the dozens of little money-shops that have cropped up all over the place. That money needs to stay in the Bahamas. If they have to pay VAT - then at leave 15% will stay. If they are allowed to not pay because "they are poor" then they will keep sending the money away and the country will suffer.

The so-called "poor Bahamian" seems to find money every few months to hop on a plane to Miami and spend spend spend. Again, money going out of the country.

On VAT may increase poverty levels
