I didn't know we had free flu shots provided? Anyone gotten one before? Are they easy to obtain or is it one of those things where you've got to fill in a sheet with your mothers adress and maiden name just for some basic healthcare?

Well the crime here is scary, but in the tourist areas are safe. While I hear what you are saying, our crime is mostly internal and very isolated, our economy isn't doing great, and this hurricane will slow it down, but we've been doing better. I do agree that we in general as a people are slightly less welcoming then we once were, but I do not think that is a product of the crime here in the Bahamas. The murder rate is going down, and as an honest local, not wrapped up in any theft, or gang I never fear for my life. I hope you come visit soon - and look beyond this story.

Insurance companies lest we forget, are in fact a business. Meaning they need to make money, they do so by selling you insurance - which you buy in case of emergency. The rates go up and down from time to time, as economies and values change. They have to be able to pay their usually highly educated staff a fair wage, as well as be able to settle any claims as needed - this is done by collecting peoples money and redistributing it as needed. It's easy to feel taken advantage of when you don't understand a system - here's a pretty good source that explains it all http://www.wikinvest.com/concept/How_th…
