Over the weekend, I pulled some receipts from the courier I use. And compared to Amazon. The Amazon import fees, even with free delivery, exceeded what I paid the courier. Amazon does not break it down, but I suspect it is the customs processing fee that starts at 10 dollars . Also they appeared to charged for volume weight based on the listed package dimension, same as the courier. Which my courier does not charge for packages under ten dollars.
Some items that did not qualify for free shipping were charging delivery fees of 15 to 20 on a single item of clothing.
Food items and supplements could not be shipped.
I have visited a merchant that sells clothing at US prices at the mall. The merchant sells items to a demography outside of my age range, and the sizing would not suit me. Furthermore, you see someone wearing your same dress when you go to public places.
So I will continue to use the courier.
And I do not buy from Shein and Temu because the import costs will exceeded the value of the items and these sites only sell crap. The dresses you see there are heavily photoshopped.
Rather than wait for Govt regulation ( translation: prohibition or restriction of online sales), merchants should research the shipping costs of the products they sell and see what they can do to compete.
For years now, I try to compare local prices vs courier shipping and get locally if appropriate.
I compared this free Amazon shipping plus taxes and duties against the invoice from my courier. There is no significant difference because it appears a processing cost similar to the couriers fee is added.
I will call DHL to see how to get the product. I looked at some clothing and tried to estimate the customs fees. It seems to me they charge the VAT duty and the ten dollars processing fee on small package.
As my courier charges this only on packages over ten pounds, the customs fees were about the same my courier would charge on a fifty dollars item of clothing.

I miss the days when VAT replaced all customs duties and was used to pay the national debt.
That changed since 2015. Sad.

They don't charge duty on freight charges.
They charge vat on the freight charges. They charge vat on duty .
Example:
clothing at 100
Shipping 10.
Duty 20.
Landed cost 130, vat is 13.
So you pay 20 + 13 = 33
Plus processing fee with vat : 11
44 dollars.
Plus you pay this new JDL scanning chargers which I don't know the formula.
