Dear Neil,
Do you know if anyone is looking into the potential additionality value of Bahamas blue carbon?
One of the requirements of all carbon offsets is that they are additional, or indication that these projects would not have been implemented without “additional” finances from carbon offset generation. Essentially, standing stock can’t be sold, only actions that are additional can – e.g., conservation of a threatened ecosystem or restoration of a degraded one.

What is the additionality value of Bahamas blue carbon? Only actions that are additional to the baseline can be sold on the voluntary carbon market. There may be great standing stock of blue carbon in the Bahamas, however its continued existence is not an additional activity, it would exist regardless of any carbon offsetting, hence the standing stock cant be sold.
