I haven’t seen or heard of any of our Haitian brethren clamoring for a statue of Toussaint L’ouverture recently, our homegrown radical priest is a whole different can of worms. Lets leave the long suffering and generally innocent Haitians out of the statue debate.
Yes Father Campbell, let’s replace Columbus statue with one of Fred Mitchell’s one time idol, a man he disparaged in one breath then venerated in the next. A man who ruthlessly crushed anyone who stood in his way, black or white. Fish, cut bait or get out of his boat. The Father of the Nation who led us to the pinnacle of Majority Rule only to plunge us into the the pit of corruption, drug abuse, poverty and crime that our country is today. Six of one, half dozen of the other,he would be a very fitting replacement for Columbus .
Idiots think that removing or destroying a few statues will change or sanitize history? What will our sheeple think of next? I watched a news report on BBC this morning, the British halfwits and some of their American kindred are calling for the removal of Cecil Rhodes statue, I wonder if they’ll still be quite so keen if the Trustees decide to cancel and cease funding any further Rhodes Scholarships which many people of color have been the beneficiaries of? From the sublime to the ridiculous in one breath, God help us!
What you have stated is a serious indictment of black governance in this country over the last fifty years. Majority rule is nothing more than a joke if after all this time elapsed these stigmas of which you write are still relevant,it is patently evident that we have only exchanged one oligarchy for another only the skin hue is a bit darker.
Let’s not forget which road we traveled to reach this place, Dorian and pandemic notwithstanding, lenders were extremely leery of The Bahamas long before Minnis and Co arrived on the scene. No Bahamian government has ever faced a financial disaster of this magnitude, and not of their own making in our history, the fact that the mighty USA have officially declared themselves in recession should tell you something. Many of us had high hopes that with Cooper a new page might have been turned with the PLP, unfortunately it would appear we to have gotten a Bodie on steroids.
Why is anyone surprised? Our police force is just a mirror of our society as it is today its ranks drawn from our own neighborhoods. The average Bahamians standards and regard for law and order have been headed for rock bottom for the last fifty years and now that those chickens have come home to roost we act surprised. We don't see anything wrong with black people beating or mistreating other black people, just look at how we treat the Haitians, Jamaicans, and LBGT folks in our communities, especially the Haitians and the gays. Hell, some of our so-called pastor/ homophobes even encourage us to consider gay people the devils' spawn and to beat the shit out of our children lest we are seen to spare the rod. SMT!
Ms. Johnson, I feel for you and your neighbors, however, this Tribune article dates back to 2012 and there has been no action taken and no one fined or jailed either so far as I'm aware. It will be interesting to see if any action is taken by the relevant authorities but I'm willing to bet you will remain just another voice in the wilderness.
#following an increase in the number of complaints from the public, police are warning that they intend to crack down on loud parties and other public nuisances.

#At a press conference at Police Headquarters yesterday, Asst Commissioner Leon Bethel said police are concerned about the growing number of large functions and public parties being held in residential areas until the early morning hours.
#He said: "Many affected citizens have complained of loud noises emanating from these outdoor and indoor functions due to high volume speakers.
#"Divisional police commanders are committed to monitoring neighbourhoods for signs of nuisances and will take appropriate action to bring violators to justice."
#Police intend to enforce all laws covering loud music and the sale of alcohol to minors, Mr Bethel said.
#He said police will not grant licenses for outdoor music and dancing events in neighbourhoods, and are encouraging applicants and promoters to move their events to properly regulated indoor venues, such as hotels and conference centres.
#While permits are not required for private functions in residential areas, Mr Bethel said the public should be aware that any party which draws complaints can be shut down.
#He explained that any time - whether in the middle of the day or at night - a loud noise is reported to be disturbing other citizens, an offence has been committed.
#However, Mr Bethel said, this law will primarily be enforced at night.
#Those found guilty of a creating a public nuisance can be fined up to $150, or in extreme cases, even face a short time in prison.
#Mr Bethel said members of the public are encouraged to come forward immediately when they feel they are the victim of such an offence, so the matter can be dealt with swiftly.
"During Whit Monday and the Labour Day holidays the lockdown will remain in effect but grocery stores may open 6am – 7pm, and food takeaways and drive-thrus, restaurant curbside and delivery may open from 6am-7:30pm."
Did I miss something here, how are people going to patronize these establishments over these holidays if the lockdown remains in effect???
