@porcupine, that is a very ignorant statement especially coming from someone of your intelligence. Even during times of plenty Bahamians have made a practice of poaching on a scale that matches that of the Dominicans. Nothing is sacred, and despite all of the legislation passed there is little to no enforcement. Do you really think we have reached the point where we have to start eating protected and endangered species like flamingo and iguanas?, Its nothing more than plain ignorance and selfishness lawlessness which we have in abundance and which we continue to encourage through lack of education and enforcement. In the battle for sensible conservation and environmental protection policy, we have met the enemy and it is us!
Some of the realities of our political system and some of the reasons it continues to fall short of expectations.
Over the years there have been many among us who have made the effort to contribute ideas and suggestions through various media, most of them being discarded by the incumbent powers that be as the views of political malcontents, fringe lunatics, or collecting dust in some government archive.
Many Bahamians understanding of good governance and representation, unfortunately, doesn't extend beyond the next handout. Over the years since majority rule, we have lost our collective ability to think or provide for ourselves leaving that to our political masters, focusing on the inconsequential and material, rather than the larger picture.
Sadly we have become so tribal, partisan, and cannibalistic in our politics that regardless of which cabal is in the seat of power the results are predictably more of the same and our political leaders understanding and appreciation of constructive and positive criticism is about on the same level as the peoples understanding of their representation.
Here is the scenario if this ever makes it to court: Justice: Please present your evidence! Police prosecutor and Customs witnesses: Well your Honor it's like dis, da bars dem bin shut going on two months nah an ween even had a taste from den, so we did drink it. Justice: You drank the evidence? Case dismissed!
Excellent letter Mr.Raine, but unfortunately, too much forward-thinking for our tourism and town planning plodders with their myopic love of body numbers and outdated building restrictions. From East Street going east Bay Street is a dried-out husk of what it once was, never really high end this area was nonetheless very vibrant frequented more by locals, thinking back to the days of the Nassau Bicycle Co, The Nook and Horseshoe Restaurants, Fashionette, Malcolm's garage, and The Stop-N Shop just to name a few. With a little incentive from the government and the easing of some of the more ridiculous restrictions and roadblocks, Bahamian money rather than Chinese could be used to revitalize this area, especially now, putting Bahamian money and people back to work and giving the local economy the shot in the arm it so desperately needs at the moment.
Amen, Porcupine, What do they say? You can take the man out of the bush but you can't take the bush out of the man. Maybe when the bush is under water the penny might drop, er plop.

Not defending Moultrie because he is an embarrassment, but no worse than Dion Smith was if you ever had the misfortune to see him in action, comical!
