Cases don t really matter unless you tracking time to HIT - hospitalizations and deaths do. Florida, Texas, Arizona were a very different story to New York. Loads of cases but comparatively little death. What is interesting is that there seems to more consensus that that HIT is in the 20-30% margin, in other words, in Nassau we d need about 37,000 infections best case for herd immunity...the imperial college model has daily infections ranging 20-30 times the confirmed case load in the Bahamas, if so Nassau may hit the HIT soon and grand bahamA certainly may have...who knows but let’s hope!!
Really!? Putting more people on government support? Thats just moving people from basket to the other [god Minnis said that didn't he? oops] - but he has a point furloughing them would still cost 1.75 million per month, severance would cost even more, not to mention the interest on 120 million dollar loan that still needs to be paid, airport fees, etc...There is no other option; they need to get the planes in the air and get American wallets back in the country. Hand washing and social distancing has been the most direct line of defense for respiratory disorders for decades; enforce the mask if you must but get people back in here, get Bahamians back to work, and would everyone please remember this is a bad disease but not the worse by any stretch of the imagination...Case fatality is incredibly low even with MOH pumping up the numbers with unconfirmed deaths. Chances of survival of COVID in the Bahamas is 99.99% on average and if you are young and healthy it's 100%. The chances of death due to homicide much higher (and that was with 10% national unemployment) factoring in sustained 40% unemployment for much longer...the risk to those of working age is going to be a problem. NP peak was august 11th according to Regis. Minnis's mood swings were far scarier...
I m sure it’s nothing to do with NIB running out of money for unemployment relief in September...sad to say reopening domestically doesn’t t do much at this point. People have plowing through their savings for months and who is spending money on ‘non- essential’ goods When Minnis could shut all again on the drop of hat.,,. It would be wonderful to train all these unemployed people to tell people how to stay 6 a feet part but at the end of the day Until hotels are open and vacation rentals are booking the economy is spinning it wheels in the mud, and ain’t going nowhere...not with out the 5.5 million people that visit with their wallets. There is simply no substitute for that sadly...
Remember the days when they investigated deaths before attributing a cause and added them to the count...
“ . Critics said the government wasn't doing enough to combat the virus, and some even suggested that health officials were covering up deaths. Dengue infections can be life-threatening when they occur in individuals with asthma, diabetes and other chronic diseases. #Former Health Minister Dr Hubert Minnis dismissed these claims. "**When someone who has dengue dies, that death is not necessarily attributed to the virus. It could be caused by other factors.** We are not covering up or hiding the number of deaths. In fact, I have asked the public to inform the Ministry of any suspicious cases so that we can have them investigated," he said at the time.”
Cruise ships do not do much for the economy accept prop up perceived numbers of visitors. Put another way they represent 80% of count and 20% of the spend (roughly I don t have the exact figs). We can live without cruise ships we can t live without hotels and vacation rentals.
Without tourism propping up the economy- bottom line - our currency will be devalued, cost of living will skyrocket, crime will explode and public services including medical facilities to service the population that has (compared To Covid19) a much dangerous pandemic of chronic vascular diseases. There is not an option here - open it up, enforce protection measures, If we leave the country to travel then we need the negative Covid test before we come home same as everyone else. Covid is here to stay.
Lol...The world is flat! Lol. Harry but seriously you're not doing yourself any favors. The country went into national lockdown on Aug 4th at 10pm - a 24 hour curfew for all islands of the Bahamas - the bill was actually called the Emergency Powers (Covid 19 Pandemic) (Lockdown) Order, 2020. It applied to the entire nation and as such was a 'national lockdown' - not a regional one and was therefore not in line with WHO recommendations. Were you a sleep at the time? Maybe your definition of national lockdown is different, but I think pretty much everyone in the country would agree if you have 24 hour curfew on every island, with no inter-island travel, quarantine of incoming visitors you've effectively 'nationally locked down'.
