• The updated version of this story can be read HERE

A police officer shot and killed a man who attacked him with a baseball bat on Friday night.

According to reports, shortly before 10pm, there was an altercation in the parking lot of a plaza on East Street South, opposite Cox Way. An officer, who was a patron at the location, witnessed the altercation and made an attempt to speak to the individual who was involved. The man then left and later returned with a baseball bat and struck the officer on his head and face several times.

The officer, who was armed with his service pistol, fired several shots at his assailant, fatally wounding him. Emergency Medical Services were called in and they pronounced the man dead.

The officer was transported to the hospital – his condition is not known at this time. Her Majesty’s Coroner visited the scene and was appraised of the initial facts. The investigation into this matter is ongoing and, upon completion, the findings will be forwarded to the Coroner’s Office for a Corners Inquest.

Once again a lack of information provided by the Tribune. So now even the off duty police officers are killing civilians. I guess the attack from the bat justifies using deadly force and shooting this guy several times. There are some issues with this story.

There are other questions to be answered and concerns to be addressed...other than "so now even the off duty police officers are killing civilians". Firstly, there is still a curfew in place, why are individuals (including a police officer) out and establishments still operating that close to the start of curfew. disregarding the law. There are many incidences and bad outcomes which could be avoided, but adhering to the law is something most Bahamians refuse to do (regardless of the tough financial times). Also, if someone is attacking you with a baseball bat, which is a deadly weapon (by the way), hopefully someone assists you, because sounds as if you'd throw your hands up, and then succumb to injuries inflicted upon you. I can only assume, you've never heard of the term "blunt force trauma".

Anyone with common sense would protect themselves, me included, but my first resort wouldnt be to shoot a guy " several times". I would think maybe a single shot to a guy with a bat may be enough to disable him. My apologies for having value for human life.

That's easy to say from the comfort of your home. Had he not attacked the policeman with a baseball bat, he would still be alive. If you value human life, don't try to kill people with a baseball bat.

quite obvious that the bat man had no value for human life either! Live by the sword you die by the sword!

Everyone has a right to protect themselves. I wonder if the officer identified himself as a policeman or if he just told the man to carry his beep beep and stop acting like a so and so. Why was the man so angry at this "*stranger*" that he forgot the reason he was originally upset, left, came back, to attack the stranger? I dont think its a good thing for off duty police officers to use deadly force to shoot people and it's ok because theyre policemen. We already know we have serious anger issues on the police force. This rationalization could go very bad very fast. The attacker had a baseball bat, a shot in the arm would have stopped him. But like you've pointed out I wasnt there and I wasnt bejng attacked, in any event, something is very wrong with the way these officers are being trained to **escalate** volatile situations and just kill people.

I have seen a man who was "hit in the head" with a baseball bat and killed on the "spot" Bahamians would say! If that man did in fact left and got a bat and hit an off duty police officer who told him to behave his behind. . .there is little to say. . .except if the police them are not telling the truth!!

If I have a gun in possession and see a man "attack" anybody with a baseball bat I am very likely to shoot. . .preferably, but after seeing the kind of mortal damage those bats can do to a person head. . .I will shoot!
