Where is all the VAT money?? Just a few months ago they were blowing their trumpets about how successful VAT has been..
The gov. is broke and now they are looking for any penny they can find. Maybe if they didn't squander it all on unnecessary things we might have some.
How about they get some money from the "web shops"? The gave gaming licenses to 8 of them from what I understand. It says that they charge them an Annual license fee of $250,000 dollars, $2,000 per premises, and $1,000 per agent...If you do the math, the gov. is getting a little over 2m dollars in revenue a year from these webshops. For an industry that is making millions of dollars a week, don't you think we could raise the fees and make them pay their fair share?
It is true that crawfisherman are having an exceptional season. But it is not because of the gov. "cracking down" on poaching. Please people don't be so naive. This is simply nature at work. It is because of no major hurricanes over the banks in recent years and because crawfish come and go in cycles. Poaching is still going on.
This is a load of nonsense that's why. The high yields and good price this year has little or nothing to with the PLP's supposed crack down on poaching. This is purely a natural phenomenon. They come in cycles. Up here in Abaco the boats have also been doing really well and the banks up north are not targeted by domincan poachers. It has more to do with the fact that no major hurricanes have passed over the banks in the last couple of years allowing the crawfish to mature. Hurricanes destroy crawfish traps and kill billions of young crawfish and eggs.
How does the saying go? "The first duty of government is to protect its citizens". Well, if the gov. can't protect its citizens don't be surprised when the citizens start protecting themselves.
Yes it's true.. I don't know if it's corruption or incompetence...but the way the police have been dealing with these boat thefts is leading people believe some of them are in on it.
It's not just about whether you can meet debt obligations as they fall due.. They take into consideration a number of factors. Corruption plays a role. The rate of economic growth plays a role. The debt to GDP ratio plays a role. And importantly, the outlook for the future plays a role. Obviously Moodys is not confident in the future of the Bahamas economy nor the state of our current financial affairs, nor the ability of the Bahamas gov. to turn things around.
The economy has been poorly mismanaged. And just look at Bahamar.. A private investor invested 900 odd million into it and look what happened... What kind of signal does that send to other people deciding whether they should invest their money in the country or not?? I am not surprised at all.
