Drilling in Cuba began a few months ago. Repsol, the Spanish oil company, announced that the first attempt to find oil in Cuban waters has failed. (BBC news 5/18/2012). If you want to know where the money is "The Scarabeo 9 [the oil rig] was brought all the way from China. Repsol is "leasing the rig for US$500,000 per day". Of course, the preliminary studies suggest that our neighbour has 5 billion to 20 billion barrels of oil.
The PLP claimed that they had "expert" advice before winning the election. There should be no financial surprises. If there are financial surprises, I hope that the financial team that advised before the election is not the financial team presented to the Bahamian public as the saviors of the economy. (Were the PLP campaign claims based on hot air?) What the FNM did is done. Move forward.... The PLP cannot be allowed to follow in the FNM's footprints of alleged fiscal mismanagement. The purpose of the gussymae cabinet is to give Bahamians the impression that things will get done -- smoke and mirrors. With that being said, the senators are neophytes (Senator Smith is the exception). As one radio personality stated, their job is to review the policies passed by the lower house (House of Assembly). The senate is not a training academy, it is not a part of the 52 Weeks Programme. The Bahamian public (based on the election results) is expecting/demanding change.
Schools are about education. Discipline is taught at home and through participation in groups such as Boy Scouts, Pathfinders etc. The police will not be involved in discipline, unless the officer is willing to be sued. Check the Education Act.
Many Bahamians tend to adopt American definitions because of the dominance of US articles on the Internet. The writer should (1) provide a link to the draft bill and (2) provide a definition of small and medium size business. (Many of our citizens and small business owners are educated in U.S. institutions or educated with U.S. textbooks and business books that do not represent the Bahamian reality.)
First, the businesses need to pass the first hurdle, financial reports signed by an auditing firm (for the past five years). The second hurdle will be the willingness to open the organization to scrutiny. Few businesses meet the above criteria.
Waste-to-energy needs further clarification. Which waste will be converted to energy. Bahamas Waste converts biodiesel to fuel but cannot sell to the public. Pray sir, which waste are you referring to? By the way, a waste-to-energy plant -- good idea for your housing development. It will justify the current price of your land.
The environmental stance was a "horse and pony" show a was to get Mr. Fritzgeral'd name and face in the newspapers for the upcoming election. The press fell for it, he received a lot of press and the electorate fell for it. It worked.
This was posted on the CIA's World Book and was not a letter sent directly to The Government of The Bahamas. However, this could be the introduction to increased scrutiny by the U.S. Government. (The Progressive Liberal Party has an "embarrassing" history which is chronicled in textbooks (mainly written by Caribbean political professors) on the modern Caribbean Politics.)
First, BPC does not have a track record for drilling oil. It has never drilled for oil. BPC emerged out of a mineral mining company in the Falkland Islands. According to its Website, BPC intends to hire/contract with other companies that are in this business oil drilling in deep waters. Second, our legislations are not up to international standards. Third, the company has no national development plan. Oil drilling is not an immediate event. In the meantime, we have to decide how we will proceed with specific economic zones -- tourism, agriculture, fishing, industry etc. Fourth, The Prime Minister of The Bahamas, The Honourable Perry Gladstone Christies has not addressed the issue of alleged conflict (This is far reaching implications.) "Oil exploration was first seized on by the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) as an issue that it could exploit for political mileage in the general election run-up. Then former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham attempted to use it, and BPC, to portray the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) as 'conflicted' and unlikely to act in the nation's best interest, given that Davis & Co (now Deputy Prime Minister Philip Davis's law firm) and former PLP attorney general, Sean McWeeney, were named as the company's legal advisers" As of today, Then leader of the opposition, (former) consultant now PM and Minister of Finance Then deputy leader of the opposition, (former??) legal advisor to BPC now Deputy PM and Minister of Works BPC legal advisor (former??) Sean McWeeney, now Christie Government Advisor BPC legal advisor (former??), Jerome Gomez, now Senator Mr. Cooper, stop looking at the icing and analyze the quality of the cake; check out the pan it was baked in and the temperature of the oven..... We want what is best for The Bahamas and future generations.
Mr. Stuart you receive what you wanted... press coverage. You are not in Hollywood, California. Unfortunately for you, there is another side, loss of respect for you as a serious politician. Excellent example of "political suicide". FNM, forget him!
