@ This is ours. The island of Barbados is 166 square miles. There are islands in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas larger than that.

The bus system in Barbados,we could had a similar system on New Providence from the nineteen seventies. However that idea was rejected in fear of upsetting the taxi drivers.Hence we have the chaos and confusion on the streets of New Providence today.

The Bahamas is a country of paradoxes. So call more prosperous than other caribbean countries, yet in many other ways so backward to them.

Minister Bell needs to resign. The politicians here in the Bahamas are slowly and surely destroying one of the building blocks of a modern society. The rule of law. They do not care.

Some bahamians who live and work on New Providence are blissfully unaware and ignorant of the living conditions on some family islands. A former co-worker told me this. When he was sent to visit his , grand parents on a family island. He was shocked at what he experience there. No modern infrastructure was on that part of the island, No paved roads,no electricity , no running water and a few phones. i always say a lot of Bahamians do not live or know much of the Bahamas. They live in Nassau and Freeport.

@ Monkeedoo. The financial secretary should answer that question. However why don't you ask the director at the Ministry of Works about their lack of programs to maintain and repair roads and other infrastructure in this country.

The citizenship ceremony should not have been done at the funeral. The funeral itself should have been a solemn event. This was intended for political theatrics Every thing in this country is simply a game.

The minister in a more advanced country would have been reprimanded or fired from his cabinet position for this stunt.

BONEFISH says...

That is how this country operates. This idea in the form of a PPP has been presented to both PLP and FNM administration by the above commentator. Politicians steal ideas, stifle ingenuity and pass opportunities to selected friends, family and lovers here.

@ Moncurcool. He is actually more competent with the acting financial secretary Johnson. Way more competent according to an american investment banker.

These decisions are not made being made by him. These policy decisions are made by Phillip Davis and Michael Halkitis. Halkitis is the real minister of finance. The PLP government is being pressured by both the IMF and the Bahamas international creditors. They have to find about two billion dollars to either pay or refinance the county's debt next year. I do not believe they will pul it off. Both Hubert Minnis and Kwasi Thompson are well aware of that.

Some Bahamians do not realize the important roles mailboats play in this country. The Bahamas ia an archipelago of islands. They carry freight and persons to various islands.

I salute this gentleman and others for the service they provide to Bahamians and foreigners. He clearly understands that this country can not be developed without intra island shipping.

BONEFISH says...

Islands like Exuma needs real local government. They would be empowered to deal with some of these issues. Fred Mitchell in his budget contribution basically was speaking about local government..

Both the PLP and FNM oppose real local government. They feel it would reduce their power. The elites who rule the Bahamas experience it when they travel, study live and work aboard.Yet they oppose it's implementation in this county. Strange.

The Bahamas is not an attractive country to return to after you finish your tertiary education in the U.S. Those words were spoken by a bahamian at meeting at St.Thomas University in South Florida. Those words were spoken to Perry Christie, Fred Mitchell and other PLPs.

I know of many situations where persons chose not to return to the Bahamas or want to leave the Bahamas. I know of an american lady with two master degrees. She married a Bahamian and moved to the Bahamas with him. She was never able to work in the Bahamas. She fell into a deep state of depression. A next person told me this a few years ago, both of her sons are living and working aboard. Her younger son went off to university in Canada and has never return to the Bahamas. Education is seen as a vehicle for migration from the Bahamas. Those are the paraphrased words of a University of the Bahamas official.

The Bahamas is both a paradise and plantation at the same time for different persons. Many educated, younger person do not want to live here.Even the children of the elite are choosing to live aboard in first world countries.
