The former prime minister Ingraham is blunt and plain-spoken. What he said about this PLP administration is true. They are essentially smoke and mirrors and public relations spin. They have avoided dealing with hard issues and don't want to offend certain parts of this electorate. A perfect example is the situation about marital rape and the latest actuary report about the state of the National Insurance Board's fund.
There was once a Bahamas Meter Cab Company. It was based in Davis Street ,Oakes Field. They use to operate a fleet of diesel Mercedes Benz cars as taxis. The owner of the company at one time was Robert Symonette better as Bobby. I was told this by some body a few days ago. They remembered that company and used it's services.
There needs to be a proper taxi service like that on the island .The current taxi drivers don't really cater to or service the local market. This situation is forcing almost adult to purchase a vehicle to get around on this small island. The traffic congestion on this small island is ridiculous
A tradegy. RIP to those who died in this most unfortunate incident.
Human smuggling is big business in the Bahamas. It has been so for quite some time it is brought to the public's attention when a tradegy like this happens.
These labor and other problems are passed from one political administration to a next administration The politicians in this country seem incapable of solving problems. They merely passed them on.
The problem with the Airport Authority workers goes back years. Their industrial agreement was completed in 2018 and not signed . The island of New Providence should have a unified public transportation from the eighties at least. Here we are in 2022. Small Bermuda had theirs from 1947.
The Bahamian taxation system is skewed towards the wealthy and big business.
It is very regressive, meaning that the poorer citizens pay a higher share of their income in taxes. Both VAT and custom duties are regressive taxes. Custom duties should been abandoned as a main source of taxation from the nineties. Here we are in the second decade of the 21st century. A white bahamian living in Canada said in their opinion ,the Bahamas has a taxation system from the 19th century. The Bahamas has always trailed in implementing sensible .progressive ideas through it's history.
The process for securing approvals for foreign investment in the Bahamas is both cumbersome and lacks transparency. That was the opinion of a big time PLP lawyer and politician. He compared it to a neighboring island. He was representing clients there. It was straight forward and easy to deal with that country's government agencies
The Bahamas should have done what every other country in the western hemisphere did. They should have signed on to the WTO at it's inception in 1994. This would forced the many structural changes to be made earlier that are needed to be made to this economy. This country is way behind in some areas of development.
Halkitis can't be minister of finance because he is not a member of the house of assembly. The minister of finance has to be member of the lower house. That was stated in the constitution. That was why the late Sir William Allen was initially the minister of state for finance. He was a senator. He only became the full minister of finance when he won the Montagu seat in an election.
The PLP government should disclose the amount of these settlements and their reasoning for these settlements. They should explain why these persons were jumped in front of the queue in getting their money. There are others who have sued the government and won. This needs to be done in the name of transparency, good governance and accountability.
A s for the FNM, they can't talk on this matter. They made a substantial payment to Algernon Cargill, the former director of NIB. This was in settlement of a suit filed against a previous PLP government. That was done under a confidential non-disclosure agreement.
