The junior track and field program in Jamaica is heads above the rest of the English speaking Caribbean. It is also ahead of the Bahamas. It is driven through their schools both public and private. Schools there push truck and field as a way to access funding from their alumni for their development. The closest to that in the Bahamas is St.Augustine's College and Queen's College. They have for a number of years siphon athletes from the public school system . Also the private track clubs play a role in the sport development. However quite a number of lower -income Bahamians can not afford their fees. Also there is a lot of raw, untapped talent in the family islands outside of New Providence and Grand Bahama. It was good to see what Andrew Tynes and James Rolle did with the coaching clinic in Andros. That needs to be encouraged and done more regularly.
The late educator and social commentator Vince Ferguson wrote this in an opinion piece. Bahamians want the fruits of a next system. He also said that the Bahamian people through their political leaders have delayed making necessary changes. These changes since delayed would become more painful when they occur. What he said is very true about a lot of things in thus country. This situation with NIB is simply one of them.
The island of New Providence should had have a unified public transportation from at least the nineteen sixties. Bermuda had theirs from 1947. Not having one on this small island, mean the poor quality of life experienced by many here and as well as one of the factors that makes the cost of living so high here. Sensible progressive ideas take years to be implemented in this country.
The main role of the MP is to review, debate, amend and pass laws. Their first function is first and foremost that of a legislator.
What is really needed in this country is federalism and a real system of local government. Many of the things that is requested of the MP is done by local government officials in progressive countries. The report on the introduction of local government produced by Dr. Nicolette Bethel and her team has been ignored. The first thing mentioned of this report by the minister Renward Wells was that gave to much power to local government officials.
In the United Kingdom, there are regional parliaments. There is a regional parliament for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland There has been local government in the United Kingdom for over nine hundred years .Sir John Major, Joseph Chamberlain and Jack Straw were all local government officials before being elected to the national parliament in the United Kingdom. The Kennedy political dynasty originated from local and state governments in Massachusetts
An english man said to me, Bahamians don't understand really governance. Most of the elites in this country have no understanding of how a modern .progressive country is governed.
The island of New Providence is a planning disaster .There is no urban planning in the Bahamas except in the port area of Grand Bahama.
The city my sister lives in the United States, is basically the same size as New Providence. It has about 150,0000 more inhabitants than New Providence. It is properly planned and laid out. It is managed and governed by it's elected mayor and city council. Here on this island, everything and anything goes. There is no sensible zoning, no real system of public transportation and poorly organized waste management system .New Providence is simply a third world island.
You can see poverty and hardship in the inner-city and certain other areas of New Providence. Yet on the eastern and western areas of New Providence, you have persons who are living an opulent lifestyle.
This country main sources of taxes for the government are consumption base. This affects persons at he lower income levels more than persons at higher income levels. Combine that with poor education and lifestyle choices, you have an increasing level of inequality in this country.
The Bahamas is years behind in the development and use of renewable energy sources. Far behind Jamaica and Barbados in this regard. Sensible, progressive ideas some time take years to reach this country. This country have quite a number of vested groups who have this country so backward for their personal financial benefit.
The Bahamas is governed like a communist country. An Englishman said that years ago. It reminded him of how Stalin and Khrushchev governed the Soviet Union. All decisions were made by the politburo even minor or mundane ones. Same mentality in the Bahamas.
@ John. The Bahamas was not a shopping mecca for caribbean nationals. The Dominican Republic is cheaper .There are Walmart stores in Puerto Rico, a United States territory Also there is the free trade zone in Panama and Aruba..
Corruption is deeply engrained in the Bahamas. Crime pays in the Bahamas .A relative of mine whose father is an anglican priest basically said that to me. He said that after observing life in this country over the years.
