The minister is completely wrong. He has prejudice a matter that has to be reviewed by the coroner. Those comments are now in the public domain. As a senior attorney practicing previously, he should know better.
Rest in peace Sir Sidney. Trailblazer, icon and civil rights activist. To hear persons like Oprah Winifrey, Tyler Perry, Halle Berry and even President Biden speak of him after his passing was astounding. It showed how many lives were impacted by him.
The Bahamas by in large has done a poor job in highlighting the achievements of bahamians in the diaspora. The Bahamas is way behind in this regard in comparison to other caribbean countries.
Mr. Hartnell is telling part of the story. Tyler Technologies contract was terminated by the Minnis administration in 2017. That project along side other projects like the revenue enhancement unit was abruptly terminated. Like a former contractual worker said to me in 2018, there projects are needed and have to be restarted. They were abruptly restarted by the Minnis administration after their poorly thought out tax policies stated to fail. To this day, Marlon Johnson can't answer the questions posed to him by a former senior FNM cabinet minister about that vat tax increase.
These projects serve several purposes. One ,the modernization of the revenue administration system in the Bahamas. Two, to widen the tax base. Three, increase the yield of the present tax system.
People who know how these projects were conceived and planned, know the real story behind them
The problems with the education system in the Bahamas precedes Minister Lloyd. These problems have festered for over three decades. Inept and incompetent bureaucrats coupled with corruption have paid a major part in this mess. Added to that, a society and people who don't value education of any sort.
The police's premise of this incidence being a robbery doesn't add up. There is something else deeper to this matter .Like some one said previously, a lot of things are covered up in this country.
In the Bahamas, we have done an extremely poor job in documenting the exploits of local athletes. There is not much documented about the history of local sporting leagues. I remember briefly watching a documentary on Sports Max channel. That documentary was about the secondary school football ( soccer) championships in Trinidad and Tobago in the 70's. The Bahamas is behind most of the english speaking caribbean in this regard.
Both major political parties in the Bahamas has partnered with the carnival operators. The last carnival that came here in 2019 was under the auspices of the Free National Movement. People in the know in both major political parties know that.
Political campaigns have become increasingly expensive in the Bahamas. Political candidates in the last election had free breakfasts for voters. Also you have back to school give-aways and christmas give-aways. Nobody is ask where this money comes from. There is no campaign finance laws in the Bahamas. So you don't know the donors, amounts and source of funds.
@Tal, Ragged Island had a population over 350 persons in the fifties. The island population started to dwindle after the embargo on Cuba and the ban of importation of agricultural products from Haiti. A person who married into one of the big-shot families from Ragged Island told me that. That family had several sail boats carrying salt and other things to trade in Haiti and Cuba in the forties through to early sixties.
This is how we roll in this country. Naked abuse of the taxpayers' funds. Both parties have done it. It was done more blantantly by one party than the next.
Maintenance of parks and beaches should not be a function of a national government. Guardian radio host Dwight Strachan said that. These roles are done by the local government. That is how it is done in most progressive countries.
