In the Bahamas, we have done an extremely poor job in documenting the exploits of local athletes. There is not much documented about the history of local sporting leagues. I remember briefly watching a documentary on Sports Max channel. That documentary was about the secondary school football ( soccer) championships in Trinidad and Tobago in the 70's. The Bahamas is behind most of the english speaking caribbean in this regard.
Both major political parties in the Bahamas has partnered with the carnival operators. The last carnival that came here in 2019 was under the auspices of the Free National Movement. People in the know in both major political parties know that.
Political campaigns have become increasingly expensive in the Bahamas. Political candidates in the last election had free breakfasts for voters. Also you have back to school give-aways and christmas give-aways. Nobody is ask where this money comes from. There is no campaign finance laws in the Bahamas. So you don't know the donors, amounts and source of funds.
@Tal, Ragged Island had a population over 350 persons in the fifties. The island population started to dwindle after the embargo on Cuba and the ban of importation of agricultural products from Haiti. A person who married into one of the big-shot families from Ragged Island told me that. That family had several sail boats carrying salt and other things to trade in Haiti and Cuba in the forties through to early sixties.
This is how we roll in this country. Naked abuse of the taxpayers' funds. Both parties have done it. It was done more blantantly by one party than the next.
Maintenance of parks and beaches should not be a function of a national government. Guardian radio host Dwight Strachan said that. These roles are done by the local government. That is how it is done in most progressive countries.
Embarrassing and humilating teenagers and children on tv is not the best method. You need real programs .
Programs like remedial education, literacy and numeracy programs. Skills training, parenting classes and family enrichment programs. Also sex education classes. Programs to renew the family structure and also to reduce the disintergration of communities.
I hope that this agreement bring benefits to the Bahamas. Many bahamians are unware that Germany was a significant source of tourists to the Bahamas. Lufthansa the German airline use to have weekiy flights to the Bahamas. The Bahamas lost some of the German tourism market to Cuba and other caribbean islands. Also there is German investment in the tourism market here. Stella Maris and Blue Lagoon Island are examples of that.
The bahamian parliament is dysfunctional at best. Many of it's members don't understand or follow it's rules. It is simply a reflection of this society. The average voter does not know the role which their mp plays in it. What is a good mp to the average bahamian voter, in a more advanced countries, those functions are done by the local government,
Michael Pintard is a good choice. He is an eloquent and persuasive speaker. He has a background in the creative arts and agriculture. He is also a product of the public school system. He had the support of most of the heavy hitters in the party.
Political parties in the bahamas need an infusion of new ideas, policies and people. They need renewal on a consistent basis. Less they become stagnant. They also need to become more transparent and inclusive. There needs to be a decentralization pf power in this country. There needs to be a real local government which will allow people more say in how their communities are run.
This should be done .Some family islands needed greater autonomy from New Providence. A percentage of the tax dollars generated on some islands should be spent there.. The local population through their local government officials sometimes have better ideas, how those funds are to be spent. It really make no sense for an MP or bureaucrat based in New Providence to decide certain decisions for family communities.
The Bahamas has a very flawed democracy. Many persons elected to parliament don't seem to know how the system of government should function. They don't seem to be interested in learning how it does also. Positions should as speaker and senators should not given to first time member of parliament. They are usually given to senior .more experienced persons in other parliaments.
Bahamians don't even understand the role of an MP is. In fact, jobs they attribute to a good mp is done in most countries by the local government. Garbage collection, cleaning of verges, road sides and maintenance of public parks. My sister's congressman is not responsible for that in the US.
