There needs to be a public education campaign with the introduction of the credit bureau. Many persons here, have issues with managing credit and their financial affairs.
The Bahamas is slowly entering the twentieth century. i have relatives who dealt with credit bureaus from the nineties in the U.S.
Bahamians simply don't understand their system of governance. They are not taught much about it in their school system. Instead they are feed a steady diet of political propaganda and revisionist history.
You have people taking parts of the presidential system of government and merging it with the parliamentary model. Canada and Japan ,highly developed countries don't have fixed election dates for national elections. Yet they are highly democratic. Canada also has provincial and a very strong system of local government.
Great Exuma island is both beautiful and very expensive I learned that when I went on a short vacation there. Wages in this country have not kept pace with both housing prices and rental prices.
A lot of persons are being priced out of the rental and housing market.. There is a huge unmet need for affordable rental units and housing in the Bahamas. An american businessman of all people ,told me that.
The Vat was to be implemented at a rate of 15 % if the Ingraham administration was re-elected in 2012. Zhivago Laing minister of state for Finance in that government said that publicly. That was part of the fiscal consolidation program
Only Dr. Minnis knows the date when the election will occur. He has that right under the Westminister system of governance. He still has nine months or less in his mandate.
Tax amnesties have been done before by both PLP and FNM governments for outstanding real property tax. According to the government records, there is over six hundred million dollars uncollected in real property tax. So twenty -seven million dollars is less than five percent of the amount outstanding. Mr. Hartnell did not even bother to ask Mr. Johnson ,what was the amount that was written off and forgiven including the surcharges.
As for the Tyler Technologies project ,Mr. Johnson has nothing to do with that. That project was started under financial secretary Wilson. All the projects that were stopped by the incoming Minnis administration in the Ministry of Finance, had to be restarted Somebody with an advanced degree in economics said those projects made sense and are needed.
The bahamian constitution is simply a boiler-plate template. The British foreign office gave every one in the caribbean basically the same constitution.
The Bahamas is a laggard when it came to getting independence. Jamaica, Trinidad, Bardados and Guyana all obtained independence before the Bahamas.
The Bahamas is a country with very weak social and civic bodies. The citizenry is poorly educated and remain remarkedly ignorant about systems of governance.
Local government is hard work in some countries. In a city in the state of Oklahoma, where one of my relatives ,their city councilors have a lot of work to do. The council man said in an interview, he had to read 300 pages of documents before he attended his first city council meeting. He had to know the city problems, issues and what was doing to be discussed on the agenda. He could not fumble through that meeting like some people do in the House of Assembly here.
@observer2.There is local government in the Westminister system. In fact Boris Johnson the current prime minister in the UK previously served as mayor of London.
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all have elected assemblies. The British has had local government for over 300 to 400 hundred years.
The prime minister is the only person who knows when the election is called. That is how it is with the westminister system of government. The Bahamas does not have a fixed election date yet. So it behoves, political parties to be ever ready.
Bahamians need to be taught how this system of government works. There is a need for civic education to be taught through out the school system. Bahamians by in large, simply don't understand governance.
