That is not true. There have been other leaders who have voluntarily given up power.
George Washington did it in the US. He served two terms as president and retired to his estate in Washington. Pierre Trudeau who was one of the longest serving prime minister in Canada also stepped down voluntarily.
Bahamians simply don't understand governance and management. They simply make up things as they go along.
Migrate. I know someone who moved to Turks and Caicos. They got belonger status and eventually have gotten a british passport.
But seriously, this country needs economy, political and social reform. However bahamians like you are blinded by party colours. There needs to be complete overhaul of the political system here.
Both major parties have gotten rid of MPs. Remember Vernae Grant and Kendal Wright. Bahamians have short and selective memories.
Let Elsworrth Johnson tell you of the arrangement with Dion Foulkes that allow him to get the nomination for Yamacraw. Also let him tell you about the arrangement with Carl Bethel. That is how Lanisha Rolle got the nomination for Sea Breeze. Both major parties have back room deals in the candidate selection process.
Dr.Minnis is simply terrible as prime minister. Compared to Mia Mottley, Andrew Holness and Dr.Keith Rowley, he is simply out of their league. .
He survives primarily because the opposition party the PLP is viewed and branded as corrupt. He also enjoys the support of a large section of an unsophisticated media and populace.
However leaders emerge and may surprise people in their performance. Two very examples of that from history are Sir Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln.
Peter Turnquest was the worse minister of finance since independence. People who understand economics and public finance will tell you that. He made a lot of bad fiscal decisions.
Why should any tertiary educated Bahamian return to the Bahamas after living, working and studying aboard in a first world country?
Persons before Mr. Carey have attempted to get qualified Bahamians either to return home or contribute to it's development.
The Bahamas is a combination of a paradise and plantation at the same time. For many highly educated persons here ,it is merely a poorly managed plantation. I know of somebody with a Phd with good job here, who left. They could not deal with the unprofessionalism, cronyism, nepotism and the rampant victimization here. Also the stifling of creativity, the stealing of intellectual ideas and the group think, which frowns on independent thinkers.
The FNM on assuming office in 2017 disbanded the revenue enhancement unit .This unit was designed to go after tax-evaders. It collected ninety million dollars in six months after hurricane Matthew. One of lies given by this FNM government was that it was ineffective. Moody's the rating agency said that the unit was effective and questioned why it was disbanded.
This FNM government terminated the contract with Tyler Technologies. Tyler was engaged in the process of modernizing the real property unit .One of the things they were doing were digitizing the real property register. This FNM government realized after about a year, that project was needed. They had to re-engage Tyler Technologies at a higher price.
Now in a fiscal crunch, they come up with this cockamamie idea. Write off 50% of amount due from delinquent real property tax payers. Reward persons tor their delinquency. Some body said to me, I pay my property tax bills on time. What about me? The person said to me they can't get a discount on what they have paid on time and in full.

Allegations of police brutality has been spoken of for years in this country. Read the transcripts of many court cases.
This is one of the many issues in this country that have been allowed to fester. That is typical of life here in the Bahamas.

This is how the Bahamas operates. In the US, where my sister lives, that company could face both civil and criminal charges.
Here you have a company owned essentially by a sitting member of parliament breaking the law. Things like this undermine the rule of law.
