This is one of the major development challenges of the Bahamas. It is a group of islands.
Many of these islands require infrastructure for their residents. Proper docking facilities, roads, clinics and proper schools. The average Nassuvians don't understand that. As far as they are concerned, Nassau is the Bahamas.
For years ,there has also been a lot of internal migration in the Bahamas. Many persons migrated to New Providence to live and work. Some islands in the Bahamas are being depopulated. Plenty politicians and their supporters don't understand that.
The minister of finance said that criticism of the interest rate on the 600 million dollar loan was unfounded. Now this.
You have persons attached to this same government expressing concern about that interest rate. Like someone said to me, this shows the incompetency of the acting financial secretary. He should be the senior technocrat in that ministry but he is a political appointee and crony. Even The Punch which acts as the mouth piece of the Hubert Minnis faction of the FNM has questioned the minister and acting financial secretary competency in this matter. They make a lot of poor fiscal decisions.
You obviously don't understand Canadian politics. It is not as simple as Bahamian politics.
Justin Trudeau has a minority government. The Progressive Conservative Party can't win in Canada 's two largest provinces, Ontario and certainty not in Quebec. They also can't win in the Atlantic Provinces and not also in British Columbia. Canada for the time being at the federal government has basically regional parties in it's federal parliament.
Also ask Canadians what happen to the Conservatives after Brian Mulroney left office and the accusations against him.
Bahamians love politics and power but don't understand governance and management.
The Economic Recovery Committee in many of their recommendations in the summary report merely rehashed what was in the National Development Plan of the PLP.
They did not fulfill their main mandate. That is provide ideas how to immediately jump-start this economy. Their idea unwritten, is to wait for tourism to restart in large numbers. This simply shows this modern economy was primarily developed by two men long ago. Sir Harold Christie and Sir Stafford Sands. Every body else has been riding their train.
As for the Acting Financial Secretary, he is merely one of Dr.Minnis political payoffs. Quite a number of persons in this town know the circumstances of his departure from his last place of employment.
Possession of small amounts of marijuana should be decriminalize. Too many young persons are in this country don't have a clean police record because of these laws regarding of dangerous drugs.
They sometimes unable to obtain employment or further their education. You are creating a whole class of people outside this society's mainstream. The parliament needs to review that entire criminal code and make the necessary changes.
Correction, only million dollars will be spent on the construction of sidewalks. The rest will be spent on various other capital projects including parks.
When this was done by the PLP, it was implied that it was corruption by FNM operatives. Now that is done by the FNM, it is economic stimulus. It is really an economic theory developed by an English economist Keynes during the great depression. He advocated increased capital spending to drive economic activity.
An African American told a relative of mine this, Bahamians don't understand their system of governance. their taxation system and are not taught much in these islands. This is a perfect example of that.
Correction, Johnson is the acting Financial Secretary. Reporters here in the Bahamas don't know how senior civil servants are appointed or removed from office. All they do is print releases.
This government has lost the script on the response to the COV19 pandemic.
Cayman Islands is way ahead of the Bahamas in terms of testing.
They initially refused an offer of help from the private sector in securing test kits. They turned down initially the Cayman Islands offer to sell them test kits at cost. That is their mo ,to turn down aid and suggestions from certain quarters.
Their plan was simply to lock down, fatten the curve and reopen on July 1st.They had a very naive, simplistic plan. But that is a mo in basically every thing.
I hope and pray that this November 1st reopening works out. If not, this economy is going to be in more trouble.
