The death penalty has not been abolished in the Bahamas. It is still on the law books The privy council in various ruling has made it hard to be implemented The Pratt and Henry case from Jamaica and the Maxo Tide case from the Bahamas.
That is the major role of parliament to review, pass, amend and repeal laws. There is a whole slew of laws needed to be pass to modernize the statue laws of the Bahamas.
Rt,Hon Hubert Ingraham said that years ago, that there was a lot of laws here that needed to be amended .He said that the British had modernized many laws that were still on the books here. That is why a law reform commissioner was appointed.
The letter writer is like a lot of bahamians. Self righteous ,bigoted and dishonest intellectually. That is why the Bahamas is in the state it is. Simply blame the foreigner for your failings and don't take any responsibilty for them. .
The Bahamas is just a big cover-up country. Nothing bad is sensibly or honestly addressed. The situation at the prison is one of them. That is one of the reasons why this country is not progressing like it should.
The view is the propaganda taught by bahamian politicians whether UBP,PLP and FNM. Outside of tourism and financial services, the Bahamas has no real economy. If you ever travel to the south eastern islands except Inagua, you will see this.
The westminister model of governance is not obsolete. Rather you have an undereducated and under exposed population. Bahamians are not taught much in terms of civics.
I doubt if the true story of devastation of hurricane Dorian on the islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco will never be told. The inept response by the government was noted by the international media. There was just a failure by government agencies in their response to this tragedy.
The Americans and the British were on the ground in Abaco before our own RBDF forces. They provided a lot of assistance in the early days after Dorian.
Somebody said on social media, how the Jamaican Defence Offices came and cleared the debris from the airport. The person said what made them so upset was that RBDF officers just stood around and watch. Also the British marines who came ashore wanted to do search and recover missions. Since they did not get approval, they did not do it.
Also a former law enforcement officer from the US was quite surprised when he went to a check point at the Treasure Cay Airport. The police he went there, were cocktailing.
Bahamians who reside here on New Providence are blissfully unaware and ignorant of what happened and is happening on Abaco .All they are getting is photo-ops,and deflections ,That is why so many Abaconians are genuinely upset at the government's upset.
The Bahamas is far from a sensible progressive democracy.Things like real local or federal government, the rule of law, separation of the branches of government and rights of women to pass on citizenship are barely understood or tolerated here.
I don't support Mr.Miller.However the man had a legal binding contract with the government. That contract was signed by a senior government official.
He simply went to court to enforce the contract. This FNM government cannot simply choose not to honour these contracts. If there is an element of fraud, corruption in them once proven, they can. However they did not prove that in this case.Their only feeble excuse was that there was not a written contract. That was disproved when his lawyers presented his copies to the court. Then they miraculously find their copies.Every body is try to play slick in this country.
There were contracts signed on the last day of the Ingraham government in 2012.The PLP who came to power honoured them. One of those contracts concerned aragonite mining. The PLP government knew exactly what would happen if they did not honour them.
A lot of people in this town has gotten burn by this government.A whole series of lawsuits will be launched against this government.I blame the current prime minister for this.A former FNM cabinet minister said he does not listen and follow good advice.
I am not a fan of Phillip Davis. But in his remarks on his return,he said something a lot of Bahamians don't know or discuss.
The head nurse on the floor at the hospital in Atlanta grew up in Andros. A lot of qualified nurses are migrating from the Bahamas. That is due in part to some of the policies and conditions he played a part in creating.
The state of downtown Nassau is simply symbolic of this country.A well known supporter of the FNM said a lot of things in this country just don't work.
