Correction, only million dollars will be spent on the construction of sidewalks. The rest will be spent on various other capital projects including parks.
When this was done by the PLP, it was implied that it was corruption by FNM operatives. Now that is done by the FNM, it is economic stimulus. It is really an economic theory developed by an English economist Keynes during the great depression. He advocated increased capital spending to drive economic activity.
An African American told a relative of mine this, Bahamians don't understand their system of governance. their taxation system and are not taught much in these islands. This is a perfect example of that.
Correction, Johnson is the acting Financial Secretary. Reporters here in the Bahamas don't know how senior civil servants are appointed or removed from office. All they do is print releases.
This government has lost the script on the response to the COV19 pandemic.
Cayman Islands is way ahead of the Bahamas in terms of testing.
They initially refused an offer of help from the private sector in securing test kits. They turned down initially the Cayman Islands offer to sell them test kits at cost. That is their mo ,to turn down aid and suggestions from certain quarters.
Their plan was simply to lock down, fatten the curve and reopen on July 1st.They had a very naive, simplistic plan. But that is a mo in basically every thing.
I hope and pray that this November 1st reopening works out. If not, this economy is going to be in more trouble.
I am not a fan of Dr. Hubert Minnis as prime minister. He did not wrestle control of the Ministry of Health from Dr. Sands. Cabinet ministers are appointed and serve at the discretion of the prime minister in this system, He was in his rights and power to ask for Dr. Sands resignation or he could revoke his appointment.
As for the opening of the borders on July1st,every body should know the reason for that. That is the start of the government's fiscal year. Tourism accounts for the largest share of foreign currency inflows. Taxes associated with tourism is a major part of government's revenues.
Most sensible, progressive ideas take decades to be implemented in the Bahamas. The Bahamas has always lagged ten to fifteen years behind first world countries.
This revelation does not surprise me. It took this government some time to purchase those test kits from the Cayman Islands.
The Cayman Islands is way ahead of the Bahamas in terms of testing.
There is a tendency from this government not to accept sound advice or aid from some quarters. That is why their response to this pandemic is so poor and disjointed just like their response to hurricane Dorian.
What you see happening is basic economic theory. Governments invest money in infrastructure programs during hard economic times to provide jobs and income for it's citizens Both the PLP and FNM government has done it.
However the quality of work performed by many of the contractors leave much to be desired. There seems to be no basic standard in construction of these sidewalks. The writer above alluded to that.
The Bahamian parliament does not function like it should. Watch the house of commons in the United Kingdom and Canada. The prime minister's question is a big thing in the United Kingdom.
I sometimes cringe when some of our MP's speak in parliament. They don't debate and barely understand what speeches persons write for them. Most bahamians don't care ,they simply want their party to win. Bahamians simply don't understand how this system of governance work. They were never taught it and basically doing everything by rote.

An FNM supporter called in to the Morning Blend talk show on Guardian Radio this morning.
He said that this is an economic stimulus program and basically Bahamians don't understand how government works.
I just laugh at his comments.

Ms.Jacinda Ardem is the prime minister of New Zealand and not president.
New Zealand is not a republic, it has a governor general.

He is a typical Bahamian politician. He loves politics and power but does not understand management and governance.
