In a situation such as this, what would have happened is that the pilot would have had an IFR (Instrument) flight plan on file, as ALL flights within Bahamas airspace after sunset must be on an IFR flight plan...BUT, he would not activate that until he got up into the air and started to talk to air traffic control. They most likely took off, started to have troubles immediately, never got a chance to activate the flight plan and all that goes with that, tracking, etc before the flight was lost. ATC won't know to start search unless that flight plan is active and the flight misses check ins or arrival times. If they never activated the flight plan in the first place, all that goes out the window. Sounds like they had problems immediately after takeoff and the pilot was more involved with saving the aircraft, or TRYING to save the aircraft, than talking to someone on the radio. In a helicopter, when things go bad, they go very bad and in a big hurry.

This is not good...always stressed with my kids that bees will not harm you unless they are under threat, leave them alone and they'll leave you alone. Wasps on the other hand will sting you just out of spite...now it appears the bees have changed their tune. Unfortunate, especially when we are trying to promote wherever possible to BEE friendly to our pollinators.

These are two completely different scenarios that are being merged together to just sensationalize the shark issues. The tourist who died at Rose Island may very well have been a spin off victim to some extent of sharks being fed and attracted into certain areas. The Abaco attack was someone actively spearfishing. Anyone who has ever spearfished knows the inherent risks of the sharks, and barracuda's for that matter, and conducts themselves appropriately while in and under the water spearing your catch. Let's not jump the Abaco attack into the mix with the Rose Island attack.

Rumors going around social media just now that Stuart Cove's has a new charter concept running out of the harbor and does baited shark dives in the vicinity of Rose Island. May be completely false, but that is what is circulating at the moment.

50% chance...what an idiotic statement. Guess I am beating the odds as I have swum with sharks hundreds of times. As stated in the article, assuming there are no added circumstances, such as fish cleaning, spearing, chumming of waters, etc, the sharks in these waters will recognize you are not their food group and leave you alone. Get blood in that water though and the game and odds most definitely change and NOT in your favour.
