Hey...if the government is going to spend money on a project...with taxpayers money...yes, take it to higher ground and to specific beefier building codes to double as a storm shelter...if I own a piece of waterfront or beachfront property and I am spending MY money, dang it, if I want to build a house there I will...it's my money, not the taxpayers...
I just don't see the restricted concept taking hold. You live in a low lying island archipelago. Part of that attraction is living on a beachfront. You MIGHT get away with a stilt or elevated home concept, but blocking thousands of acres of beachfront or waterfront properties from development would be a major disaster. Yes...this storm was bad, and hit people really really hard, but let's not get so stupid that we start making reckless laws that do the country and those communities more harm than good.
It's easier to point the finger and blame someone else this way!! But believe you me...if the storm did NOT hit as hard as it did...NEMA would probably be taking all sorts of credit because they fluked their way past major disaster.
