This is the problem with the Bahamas now...why would you not stay and attempt to be a voice to make it better. Change can only occur when people stand together and make it happen.
But if every Bahamian with a sensible voice gives up and moves away it just leaves idiots behind. Furthermore no matter where you go things will never be perfect, and you will always be a stranger in someone else's land.
Why not be a positive change in your own...we complain and we moan about things but at the end of the day we don't have the gumption or the balls to step and at least try to evoke a change.
Never mind my name says BahamianAway...that is temporary. As soon as I have completed my education to the point where I can contribute something of value to my country I will be back. I don't want to be one of those Bahamians who complain endlessly about what can be changed but then make no effort to be one that at least tries to.
Please you think they care about the state of the prison. Do you know how many more valid and useful things can be done with any money spent to create a PM residence.
1. The Prison -as you said needs to be expanded, which in truth there is no where to go. It's like the landfill, they need to relocate the prison to a remote island and only keep holding cells and minimum security at the facility in Fox Hill. All others will be ferried to the island - maybe this would speed trial dates up as well.
2. They are just looking at upgrading PMH...there is no much more that can be done. Kudos we have a new A&E but what about the surgical wards, the neo-natal units etc...all could use a good upgrade.
3. COB- they are doing what they can but there is still room for expansion of degree programmes as well as upgrading the campus, Maybe then more Bahamian students might actually be interested in attending COB instead of going away to school.
There is so much that can be done...and that is just three of them.
Because we as a country can afford to. I can't for the life of me fathom how on one hand the country is in deficit and that we are looking at a 15% rate for VAT. But then on the other hand we can afford to construct residences for the PM and for entertaining dignitaries from other nations.
Just an idea but could we possibly look at getting our country out of debt first...but then again judging from the way we are going those residences might just be built by the Chinese government. They are building everything else around New Providence.
I propose a reduction in the salary of Mr. Prime Minister to help facilitate the building of the new residences. Furthermore going forward every PM should be charged some type of rental fee to occupy the residence. After all who will pay for the electric, cable, and water in the residence- none other than the hard working public service employees who can barely afford the roof over their own heads but must now pay VAT and any other additional taxes these politicians come up with to offset their exorbitant spending.
So what's the point of Government House then...They have that big house sitting there for pretty. Utilize that if you want to entertain guest on behalf of the Bahamian people. I am sure there are enough rooms in there to facilitate such a thing.
Is anyone in the Bahamas really Bahamian anymore...I predict that in twenty to fifty years the majority of Bahamians will no longer be able to trace their roots back to Loyalist or slaves that initially inhabited our islands.
My mom can trace her family back to Andros, Exuma, and Eleuthera- and that is both of her parents. The Bahamas is being so taken over by foreign nationals who are mixing into our society that eventually there will be no "real" Bahamian. As it is the majority of these students are of some Haitian, Jamaican, Chinese, Indian descent. I have seen more children with these foreign last names than with actual Bahamian names i.e Rolle, Stubbs, McDonald etc. Now we have the Chans, Satels, Ettienes, etc.
And yes it might sound somewhat prejudiced but I am just stating fact. Then the definition of "know who is Bahamian" will no longer apply.
1. Bahamians are likes Henny Penny, Turkey Lurkey and the whole clan- one person claims the sky is falling and everyone rushes about like chickens with their heads cut off without actually verifying the information.
2. Bahamians tend to ignore warnings that are given as tests. How many people do you think would have actually heeded a test and at least pretended to consider what they would do in the event of such a disaster?
3. If NEMA did indeed give the information to ZNS that it was a test and ZNS decided not to share that with the public then the fault is with ZNS for withholding or providing incorrect information. Which in the past has been an issue with our news sources- wrong or inaccurate information.
Just saying in light of this Bahamians might want to re-evaluate how they respond to certain things.
Mr. Miller has got to be the most idiotic member of Parliament. How you can you permanently and indefinitely turn off the electricity at someone's residence pending the outcome of a criminal trial. Has he lost his God-given mind?
Yes, persons who attempt to do bodily harm and injury to a worker attempting to disconnect service should be arrested and charged. However what in the world does that have to do with turning of the electricity. If there are other occupants of the home who had no part of the criminal activity and they take care of the deliquent bill, then pray tell why should they suffer.
I swear the government sometimes are all about themselves and not the Bahamian people. Furthermore, I have long since thought BEC should be disconnecting from the pole and not in people's yards. You come into my yard and you get bitten by a dog whose fault is that? At the same time yes, my bill should be paid, but BEC workers also come to read the metre. Metres need to be relocated to a safe spot where workers can access them without having to be on someone's immediate property.
They are not going to change these antiquated ways until someone gets seriously injured or killed. SMH!!!!
The same way one prepares for a tornado or an earthquake. You really can't because truthfully the Bahamas is not a country that is set up to deal with those kinds of natural disasters. We are a flat set of islands which works to our advantage in hurricanes but outside of that we are screwed.
Unfourtunately these days countries that have never experienced certain disasters are and it really places countries in a bind as to how to deal with these types of things.
That is why it's important that Bahamians stay vigilant and don't discount anything despite how you may feel about the agency reporting.
