Actually it does make sense when you step back and see the amount of money (100M plus) that has been paid for these engines..that are being run only by persons from Wartsila.. and yet we are still experiencing outages. Bahamar is running on generator and Atlantis has not even close to capacity. So yes I would ask as a taxpayer why this is happening.
I would be very interested in hearing what the former Director of Generation, as well as what the former Board Members take is on this. I am wondering why Wartsila was not initially approved, but suddenly after the quick exit of the former Director of Generation this company was back in the picture. My guess is there was a reason BPL chose not to go with this company initially and we are as consumers experiencing why (faulty engines), of course after spending millions of tax payer dollars on these engines. This court case between the former Directors and the Government needs to be heard!! I think as tax payers it will be shocking what has happened under present Management and Board at this company.
Yet the Government targets the fishing industry ensuring only certain few continue to be able to operate thus crippling the industry. I can only imagine that this has resulted from kickbacks as it certainly is not in the best interest of the Bahamian people to be an obstructionist to a pathway of a self sufficient food supply. To top this off an income tax is coming....
It is amazing and never ceases to surprise me is how Bahamians pull down other Bahamians. This country has become a failed state and instead of empowering fishermen the Government has successfully undermined this industry as well. Split the industry (no doubt for kickbacks as per usual) by pitting those in this sector against each other. Not recognizing the overall growth potential for employment, foreign currency and increasing the ability to independently feed ourselves. Instead comments are based on conjecture and flawed reports. ...but this is just how the Government would like Bahamians to remain...suppressed and buying into propaganda. It seems only when you loose control of this sector to those with much more sophisticated fishing techniques ( foreign owned ) will you get it cause ya will feel it. It then will be too late..smt!
The challenge remains that most persons in these shantytowns have some level of immigration status including citizenship. While I agree that shantytowns are not the way, there has to be some realization on the Governments part they 1. awarded status 2. working wages do not afford the opportunity to gain proper financing 3. there are no low income/affordable housing options. Given this, the Government's strategy is flawed. If the issue is "slums" as being unhealthy then you just have to look at the inner city here to see the same, are they next, some Bahamians still have no indoor plumbing? This is nothing but a political move to desperately gain votes because it is highly visible and shocking (and pathetic), it in no way addresses the actual problem. To divert from the fact the Government has miserably failed Abaco post Dorian. The people are not going anyway from these shantytowns, all you are doing is increasing the probability of crime. Bannister is out of his depth as very seen with his involvement at BPL.
Under this same Minister, there has been a lack of regularizing citizenship for children born to Bahamian women . He is the same Minister who is involved in denying persons with PR from working in the fishing industry and this is the same Minister that has suggested that Bahamians living abroad should be denied the opportunity to vote. All of the above is against the Constitution....and we wonder why we have the attention of these international groups...yet The Bahamas has to keep borrowing...all kinds of hard mouth yet nothing to back it up.....Johnson just needs to sit small and stop the rhetoric....as he knows exactly why the UN came in.
Bannister is nothing but desperate and running scared..can't hide this time!! You cannot publicly make disparaging comments then expect that is going to be taken lightly then turnaround and deny, he really must believe the Bahamian electorates are a bunch of fools. However, the issue is Bannister acted against the Electricity Act which is very clear and he and the AG know this. If Bannister wants proof then let the court case proceed and stop dodging. I am sure Bannister will make any and every attempt to avoid open court as I have a feeling what will be revealed on Management, Bannister and Minnis will be nothing short of shocking. I hear there is a line up that have offered to testify in support of Mrs. Osborne, Mrs. Thompson and Mr. Dean. Got my popcorn as this going to be good.
This woman does not in any way represent strong and empowered women of this country. If she was she would have, for example, stood publicly in support of Mrs. Osborne after the BPL Board issue. Instead I heard she cowardly called Mrs. Osborne noting something along the lines. "I wish I could be as strong as you!", and wasn't this the same woman that was trying to jump ship to the PLP a few weeks back... hiding behind her shades. This is just another example of a career politician...disappointing as far as representation for women.
