I totally agree about the productivity problem. But if we’re being honest, this is a systemic issue in the Bahamas which goes far beyond just union employees; I’d go out on a limb and say it spans all levels of employment from the straw market to our top politicians and ruling elite and I’d say that it’s to the extent of at least 75% of our population
Or could it be that these unions, ensure that at least their workers maintain a reasonable and stable income throughout their careers.
Note, for the most part union members are still “blue collar” in nature; and at best maintain a total income far less than any managerial or professional employees.
It seems to me that the union serves to protect It’s members, a small segment Of the blue collar work force, from the economic suffering that their non union counterparts must endure.
While I’m not a union supporter, especially due to the propensity of agreements to protect union workers from dismissal due to poor performance. I do support the fact that the union members have some form of protection.
Otherwise they will be subject to the evil of the ruling class , who uses every opportunity to stomp on the lowly worker.
Notice economic problems always hurt the little people.
How many professionals have you heard of suffering from this pandemic?
Next thing you know it will be illegal to say anything to useless employees , it will be illegal to fire anyone.
Then the hiring rules will change. Soon we’ll have to hire whoever shows up, and keep them for life. Lest you want to be charged with discrimination etc
No mention of the fact that these days most employees are useless, lazy and stupid.
Nobody in their right mind would ever treat a productive employee badly, the obvious is clear.
Just keep telling yourself this “ #THE Bahamas is one of the most beautiful places on earth – charismatic people, pink sands and crystal blue waters - and attracts millions of tourists a year. Our natural beauty also enables citizens in the private sector to earn an income and put food in their families’ mouths”
For one, our nation is essentially flat baron land with imported palms. Ugly land compared to most nations in the region! Beaches are beautiful, and there are a lot of them, no question! But we’re not the only nation with beautiful beaches. Our people and attitude, by far at the bottom of the list when compared to others in the region. And as for tourism feeding our families, well yes, many can eat because of tourism, but very very few are flourishing. No where in the world are tourism/ service industry jobs seen as a dream job, but rather a job obtained by those with few options.
We need to acknowledge the ills of our nation if we are ever to advance. For one, all the tourist jobs in the world will only ensnare more Bahamian people in fruitless labour that can barely feed a family and provide a substandard housing accommodation
Our system bad attitude with a strong hint of entitlement and grand display of dumnning Kruger syndrome further reduces our chances of any potential rise to even the middle of the road of standard of living for our people.
Our government has been the worst since independence, abundance of corruption and stifling progress for the non aligned “little people”
In short we have nothing to brag about. We should be humble. While the beaches are beautiful, we did not create them. Our people are quite rude, many are xenophobic, and most are under educated.
The road ahead, will be long and require much hard work. But , to date, we have yet to do anything to support meaningful change. We need a whole NEW!!! Approach to education. We need to exterminate our poisonous political culture. We need to breakup the ruling elites domination of the economy. And we need to fix our values, family structure and attitudes towards the world around us.
Anyone who thinks we have anything under control, or that we’re leading in anything meaningful, well they are delusional!
It’s a long road once you begin the journey. But sadly we haven’t even started!!!!!
Did this guy not get caught molesting not one but two teenage boys ? Was this him or someone else? and did this not get swept under rug? Am I mistaken? Who remembers the story?
Makes me wonder if someone can molest you children, where do they get any moral high ground?
It’s a simple answer. Freedom of information would be a tool against corruption/ crony capitalism etc!
The press is owned by the ruling class. What is good for a corrupt politician is also good for the elite ruling class.
The system is genius, and the people fools.
It’s a like obtaining a gold star for a government to be deemed competent incompetent, rather than corrupt.
Truth is, with a system so perfectly run for the ruling class, there is no possible way they can be incompetent when it comes to anything else, they just choose to hide behind incompetent appearance, to mask there systemic corruption
