A 4,000 member union needs an 18,000 s.f. headquarters? They have to be kidding. What is the upkeep going to be. . . ? the monthly electric bill ? Plus they want to spend another $2.5M on a building in Freeport.
This is crazy. The BUT members should be outraged about this. Take a vote of no confidence in the union leadership. Kick them out.
They were managers and not members of the Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union. it's none of the unions business. For some reason this Union thinks that they run all of the hotels.
They can not even run their own Union. The only thing that they have accomplished is to run the Union into the ground financially. They can't even pay their payroll.
Phase it in over three years. For the first two businesses can collect the VAT and then in the third year they can pay the Government what ever cash they have left.
Are you kidding? To say that the reason people go to the Dominican Republic is because they "focus on Columbus" is ridiculous. Then to quote the increase in tourist arrivals between 1991 and 2000 is irrelevant in today's economic environment. Between 2006 and 2012 Tourist arrivals in the DR went from 3,965,055 to 4,560,000 ; an increase of about 15%. Of this increase 10% happened between 2010 and 2012.
Why - Well the economy started to improve somewhat. Also, unlike the Bahamas where 80-90% of all overnight arrivals come from the USA in the DR they are spread around the world. The US accounts for under 30%.
Also - Could it be the cost of a room ? (it's low) The cost of Food and Beverage (it's low) The service? (it's good).
To think that all the Bahamas has to do is to build a Columbus Museum to double the arrivals is a bit far fetched.

This will be one expensive hotel to stay in! ! ! At a cost of $909,090 per room to build, people should expect to pay $900 - $1000 per night. OUCH!

Looks to me like its 96% Bahamian staff, and not 98%, if there are 200 permits and 5000 employees.
