This is the most sensible thing I have ever heard a union say, indeed any union leader. Once BPL deals with their protection issues, shoddy or non-existance installation and maintenance practices, how they add to and change the distribution system, planning and quality is non-existant in this regard by the way and generation problems, they would be well on the way to becoming a modern utility company! Dealing with protection is a good start, only a start mind you!!

A threat of sabotage to a critical national infrastructure is tantamount to a threat of terrorism and should be treated as such. The AG should file charges immediately. Jail these people!!!

Racketeering low-life thugs is a perfect description of these people!! They are criminals that should have been jailed and their asset ceased. No, we here in the Bahamas have to tout them as brilliant businessmen who saw an opportunity, never mind an illegal opportunity at the time, and took advantage of it.

Its simple, this is as result of incompetence. Incompetence at all levels, the executives, middle management, engineering, construction. There are far too many people in these departments, at the highest levels, who just dont know what they dont know. They believe they have the skills but unfortunately they are seriously lacking. Gov please put an entity in charge that has a proven track record. The existing management and technical personel are obviously lacking in many respects and dont have the humility and self knowledge to know or admit it.

I say also cut those employees who's responsibility it is to ensure that the catastrophic island wide blackout that happened this week does not happen. And I say terminate them for cause, negligence and incompetence. In this modern era, especially in such a small power grid, such blackouts should happen very rarely, once or twice a decade perhaps. Modern engineering and maintenance techniques should all but eliminate such occurrences.Terminate those responsible immediately and put people there who know what they are doing. Surely the Unions don't condone negligence and incompetence!!

All this talk of decending upon and surrounding the site with immigration and police officers and the like to conduct head counts is nonsence. The HOA is just like any other contract, there are remedies for non compliance with any of its terms. What ever department of gov is responsible for ensuring compliance with the terms of the contract must invoke the remedy as we can rest assured that if the gov of the Bahamas does not fulfill its obligations under the contract there will be consequences! Who ever in gov is responsible for ensuring contract term compliance please do your job.

If the good president of the Contractors Association was so concerned with the ratio of Bahamian to foreign workers at The Pointe, where was his voice or the BCA's for that matter prior to the Tribune article last week? As i can recall from the Tribune article that exposed the issue, this was as a result of their own investigation, not the BCA. This guy is only concerned about being in the newspaper and public exposure at every opportunity. His last opportunity to be in the press was a debacle as a result of a spat with Min. Bannister over the appointment of the contractor's board. His point of view must be taken with a grain of salt.

What you say may be correct, to a degree that is, all I am saying now, is don't use Building Code violations as the reason for the demolitions. Egregious Building Code violations abound in this Nation and I don't see any other buildings being demolished. Call it what it is, to use your term, it is a "war on Shantytowns".

Craig says...

Why only focus on buildings in Shanty towns that don't adhere to Building Codes? Surely the good Minister and those whose technical knowledge he is relying on, know that there are a substantial amount of buildings in Nassau that do not adhere to Building Codes and many of these have the most egregious of code violations. A great deal of these non-code compliant buildings are prominent Government buildings that Ministers of Government occupy everyday. Perhaps they should modify their position in this matter and eliminate the term "Building Codes" from any statements they make. Use some other term as it implies Building Code violations primarily occur only in Shanty towns. More disturbingly taken literally this would suggest that the Government is unfairly targeting the immigrant population as applying this logic elsewhere on this island and throughout the Bahamas for that matter, would involve a substantial amount of demolition work, which of course is ridiculous!!
