Will the people who don't want us to help the Dominicans please demand that Government give back the $100,000 they donated after Matthew? Probably not as you are more willing to take then give. Or we could match them and donate over $1.1 million (based on our economy being 11 times the size).
The way we have treated Haitians has not been in a Christian manner for decades. If we really wanted to be serious about the illegal problem we should be fining and locking up those who hire them. If there were no jobs they wouldn't be here. Currently a country with a population of 72,000 has lost at least 27 people due to a storm with many others missing and the island destroyed. This is like Bahamas having a storm that kills 140-150 people and we have no power for months. If this occurred i would hope the international community would help, rather then say too bad things are bad over here too.
The US has many people of Bahamian descent who have met their criteria to legal live there. They also have many who are their illegally as well. The Dominicans will have to met the legal criteria our Government demands to be allowed to come over here. It is not a free for all and everyone can come.
Well at least we can see that this is no longer a Christian nation. Yes there are people who are in need in this country, but there are also people in desperate need in our neighbouring countries. One hopes that other people feel the same when we next get hit by a storm. Going by the logic displayed here, Why should people in the US help Bahamas, when there are Americans who are in need? Or maybe even why should people in Nassau help the southern islands when there are people in Nassau who are in need. Of course should the shoe be on the other foot these same people will be the first crying and damning others for not helping them
One thing people forget is whilst the current tax system is an unfair tax system to the poorer people who end up paying a larger portion of their income in tax. It has meant that Bahamians as a whole pay less tax then people in most nations. This is due to the current taxes being consumption taxes, which means our tourists contribute a lot to our tax base (be it the VAT on any food they buy, to the duty on any goods they buy). Once you get rid of one of those then the number of people contributing to to the tax of the country is reduced, meaning those who end up paying may need to pay more.
However at the end of the day it is most probably going to happen in the next 5-10 years, as Government is not going to take the hard decisions to sort this country out, so will rely on more money coming in, to continue to waste on friends and family. And when that doesn't work they will devalue the BSD.
Or i don't pay them $1 million and lose out on $30 million. Without knowing the actual details on both (as in releasing the policy etc), it is hard to know who is in the right. However if Irma had hit Nassau you could guarantee the payout would have been significantly larger and probably over the $2.6 million.
Do people understand what the PM said. He did not say leave for good. He said you should leave now as the place is uninhabitable. There won't be a clinic, Power, water for a while. So go to a place that has these. Now maybe the Government decides that they wont repair those, in which case people from Ragged Island will either have to do it themselves or leave. But that is in the future. Right now the PM is only saying it wont be fixed overnight.
and where is the money for these things. Per the items you are asking for, and at a guess, it would be about $100 million per island, if not a lot more. Govt does not have that amount of money. I agree with Mr. Rolle in Exuma, tell the islands that Govt wants them to live in one settlement. They are free to live elsewhere, but Govt isnt building roads etc to the other settlements.
The problem is everyone thinks it is easy to stop the crime and the Government just needs to do XYZ. It's not easy to stop and it will take 10-20 years to get it right, and that's with everyone's involvement. Hanging isn't going to stop it, firstly you would have to have someone found guilty before you could hang, and seeing as i think the % of murders solved is 20% or less then this won't stop the murders. In addition we keep being told that many of the murders are revenge for murders that person has done, so people who kill must know they already stand a chance of being killed. CCTV alone wont work but would be good to have (the UK has more cameras then most places and they still have murders).
My suggestions would be education (our schools are failing too many), improve the conviction rate (proper policing and investigation so trials are won), CCTV and legalise weed as too many kids go down the crime route via that.
You have athletes from all over the commonwealth here competing. Along with them are numerous family members who have come to support their families. These people will be adding much needed heads on beds for the hotels. This translates into increased economic activity for the tourism sector. Whilst $7 million seems a lot at the moment, until you see the final outcome you have no idea if this will cost money, break even or make money. But always as long as it is not money being spent on an area you want, you will complain.
