This is ridiculous. This is what the person who helped should have gotten with this person getting a lot longer. I am sorry for the mother that the nation has failed her.
So another person getting money and not actually doing a job. AS they don't file anyway lets get rid of this department and save some money for the taxpayer.
Its a little too soon to work out if investor confidence will be affected by this. But one can only assume this is total politics at play. Arbitration means behind closed doors, so the PM has no intention of Bahamians finding out what really happens. All you will hear is the GBPA agreed to pay something, and even if its $1 the PM will not let us know but make it look like a win. All along he is making sure we all know what his side think to make sure his message is getting across. I always find it strange that Governments of The Bahamas do not realize that whilst they may say something for Local consumption there is this thing called the internet which means the world knows about it as well.
No company is going to pay $357 million just because they were asked for it. This is going to arbitration and then maybe further. Hopefully further as we will then be able to see what the $357 million is made up of. If it turns out that the amount is no where near this then it seems to be a pure shakedown to get rid of the current owners of GBPA. And if that's the case it sets a very worrisome mark in how companies coming here will view The Bahamas. Hope we are able to do with less FDI as the message will have been sent
This was to be expected. If NIB had been used correctly this could have easily been met by the gains on all the investments that should have been made since NIB Started. However since NIB has only ever been a slush fund for government it has never made returns necessary to function correctly. Hence the need to constantly increase our contributions.
I'm guessing that there is a document which states who should provide what and the cost etc so this can be easily verified. At the same time no company will pay $300 million every 5 years to get what Freeport has gotten from Government. So i am sure this will now be in courts for years. This is most likely a tactic to try and force the families to sell up at a reduced price. Will see if it works, but as TImesup says it sends a strange message to potential investors, especially when Government agreed to extend the Port until 2054 only a short while ago.
And this is why Crime is so bad. How does it take so long to make any decision. They probably had to have a committee formed to decide if they need a committee to be formed to deal with this. But before they make the final decisions they need to have a big luncheon to celebrate how great everyone is. By now they should have interviewed everyone and got the evidence to be able to make a decision one way or the other
