When PLP reduce VAT to 10% but put it on all bread basket items they said this was due to it not being right that wealthy benefitted from VAT free items. They said it would be better for Government to increase social services to help those most in need. They did nothing to help social services and now they are doing the opposite of what they said was needed. All in the hope it will help them in the next election. Why should someone who earns $100,000 need 5% off their food. Use the $30 million reduction to help those who need it most. If its 3,000 then that's $10,000 each, if 30,000 that's $1,000 each. Either way much more then the 5% reduction will help them
We have spent over half a billion dollars on Bahamasair (and this was 10 years ago so its a lot more), and don't get good service. Other local airlines seem to manage it to most locations. it would be cheaper for the Bahamian public if Government guaranteed a certain number of seats on each plane to the unprofitable islands then and Bahamasair working.
The department knows what they are doing. They just don't care. They are broke so need money from everywhere to continue the merry go round. They won't cut expenses or stop the rampant corruption so it is on the small business man to take up the slack. And if they fold then so be it, might mean an opportunity for them or a friend to get in on it.
Yes suspending them is the correct thing after what they did. However they did what they did as they were not allowed to speak on important matters. That is because the so called "Brave" PM did not want them to
There are already laws on the books stopping this stuff. They just aren't enforced. This is all to make people think they are doing something. They will talk about it for a year or two, hope it blows over before they enact it. If it doesn't they will enact it and like most laws they won't enforce it. Have all those who should disclose , disclosed? This is one of the controls to ensure no corruption. but it is ignored, just like any new law will be.
Wonder how he got this job if he doesn't understand that. He could have said it happens in US election years and people would have agreed. Instead he went with this, and the Tribune using their reporting skills just repeated it and didn't question it

But you've spent the last 3 years telling us that it was better to have the same VAT on all items. Why the sudden change?
