It doesn't affect only 36 people. It affects all of us as we are the ones paying for it. When will people realize that when the Government spends it is our money. And yes that $100m plus was a waste as well.

Unfortunately we never will. And the people who did wrong will be rewarded yet again. There will be no change over here until its too late.

> r Wilson declined to give a figure for how much the Government believes it loses out on annually in uncollected taxes, but added: “Based on internal discussions and what we know, we feel - and that’s the persons involved in tax administration in the Government - very comfortable it’s a significant figure.”

So you have no idea how much it could be but decide to make it just enough to cover your expense increase which is happening no matter what. Amazing that.

Dawes says...

Today must be April 1st. No way the above will happen. Our Government's of whatever party do not know how to curtail spending, especially if revenue has increased. All that would happen is they would see Revenue has gone up by $250 million and then spend $300 million thinking they have plenty money.

Bahamas will become a Republic when a majority want it to. Currently there is not and even those who want to are not that concerned (we hear from a few every now and then but nothing much). I do however find it funny that the letter writer wants us to become a Republic and get rid of the privy council and replace it with the Caribbean Court. Both of these still show that we are unable to do it ourselves. Why shouldn't the top court in this land be a Bahamian court? Surely a nationalist would want that?

Dawes says...

Yes corporation tax would be a good thing for many companies. Not for Government though. Take the last 2 years, many have run at a loss so they would not only pay 0 in tax but once they start to make a profit they would be able to offset the tax they should pay with the losses. Currently those companies have to pay business license so Government is getting something (although at a much smaller amount). The Government would also need to hire many more qualified accountants to be able to police this, so this would lead to an increase in Government spending and reduced income during times like these.

It was a waste of money when it was first planned and is a waste of money now. We have numerous stadiums sitting around doing nothing except costing us money. Do they really expect that stadium to be even half filled ever?

Dawes says...

And you can email and then sit and wait for who knows how long to get your bill. They know they can't use the post office as that's collapsed. Bunch of failures for too long and we keep electing people who keep the same useless civil service there.

Dawes says...

Its not just high ends. I have heard of many people who were on the cusp of paying real property and now being given double. As a lot say show them how they can get their house sold for that and they will. Its easy to say make the high end home pay more, but this is also hurting the middle class.

Dawes says...

Can the reporter not understand that when the FS says 80,000 homes, he does not mean 80,000 real property paying homes. He means thats the total. You then need to find out how many actually pay tax and from there work out the % that has increased.
