Despite converting to Islam some 10 years after joining the force, Constable Bain certainly would have been well-versed in the grooming regulations. Using religion as an excuse to be allowed exception to those rules should not be allowed. He is a public servant and as such, needs to follow the rules of the public service. And particularly in military or quasi-military organizations, uniformity is essential to morale and good discipline. Don't like it -- find another job.
It sounds as if accommodations had been made for him to be able to practice his religion, such as time for daily prayers and the like, so he cannot say he was discriminated against for his religion.
What will happen if Rasta police officers insist they be allowed to smoke weed as it's part of their religion? Or if officers refuse to work on Saturdays or Sundays because of their religious faith? Let's not open a Pandora's Box, as the previous poster suggests.
This country has enough serious issues to deal with without clogging the courts with to beard or not to beard nonsense.
If I were Mr. Davis, I'd be very worried. I'd be asking myself not if, but when, the anti-corruption unit will be knocking on my door. The cheek and brass of these PLPs continues to amaze me. You'd think the lot of them would just fade away, and sit quietly in a corner somewhere, and not want to attract any more attention to themselves after running the Bahamas into the ground.
And we get nothing? Is the good minister serious? Let's check off a few things --
1. We get a per head tax for every passenger brought by the cruise ships -- whether they get off the ship or not. 2. We get docking fees and other fees from the cruise ships on each arrival and departure. 3. Until we clean up our downtown area, stop the hassling and harassing of tourists by local vendors and drug dealers, and have something to offer them, maybe we should get "nothing"!!
What on earth is Freddy talking about? He's lost it. Sandilands has an opening. Tribune, please stop giving this first class jackass any more print. He's a national embarrassment.
While there's no question that crime is out of control in New Providence, the US needs to make note that their claim of "traffic accidents pose a safety hazard in some parts of the Bahamas, primarily due to intolerant drivers speeding and driving recklessly on two-way, two-lane roads not designed for high-speed travel and, in some cases, in need of maintenance.”
They do not add that several serious accidents in the out islands were caused by their own US nationals not bothering to drive on the left! And when questioned by police after the accident, claimed to not realized they weren't in the US and that they figured we drove on the right too. Maybe a bit drunk too? Or just arrogance?
Litigation for 1400 damn lounge chairs????????????????
CCA needs to get on with it and stop making excuses. Now we see exactly what Sarkis had to put up with and what slime he had to deal with. Wonder how the new "owners" feel about all this.
If someone came up to me and demanded I pay them a kickback for my business, I'd be damn sure to name them from the tallest rooftop. As for "those people have rights" -- who are you kidding? They lost that right when the committed a crime. This is the problem with this country -- corruption is so ingrained that people seem to have difficultly even understanding what ethics are and what constitutes corruption. Time to put an end to this and name names. And send them to Fox Hill if it's a chargeable crime. Enough is enough, or we'll never be anything more than a backward third world backwater. You choose!
Why is Dr. Minnis unwilling to name these people -- even if it is years later? That is part of the problem, as it's the silence and the nod and wink that keeps the corruption going, as no one is willing to name names and expose these corrupt people. His silence only protects the corrupt. If he truly means what he says, he must be the first to speak out and lead by example.
Here we go again. .... it's going to be a long, hot summer.
Now Baha Mar is online, it's only going to get worse. When will they deal with this and stop telling us lie after lie about how they have it all under control?
