Many building contracts go to Foreign Contractors because they put up performance bonds.

Bahamian Contractors don't want to do what is necessary to be able to qualify for the performance bond. Go figure.

It is not the speed so much.

You can start by have a proper driving test. Had my son take three lessons in the country where he was studying. Came back home and took our (Bahamas) test. He passed easily. His words "The test was a joke".

He was to have several more lessons and classroom study to be able to take the test in the country where he was studying. That one was "no joke".

Also lets enforce a requirement that you have tires with a certain amount of tread. Ticket those who fail to signal at least 5 flashes before they turn (Police could make some serious revenue out of that one)

A poorly driven, poorly maintained car is dangerous at any speed.

What Mr. Roberts needs to do is hire a professional who will be able to provide the Bahamas Negotiating Team with the information necessary to provide "reasonable" terms that will allow the paper company to compete.
Bahamian businesses, like Mr. Roberts, don't utilize lawyers or accountants to advise in these matters. Foreign companies do and have done for decades.
Time that Bahamian businesses joined the real world in the 21st Century.

"Emmmm.......Cove has been in business for over 40 years.......we can't lend to him....he has a worldwide reputation......no, definitely can't lend to him........movie stars and other movie makers use him.....no, looks like he is a good stable business....yup, we don't lend any money in The Bahamas these days.......we just love to keep the economy in a bad state so that we can complain about the country.....don't look to us conduct our business professionally and act as we should..... don't worry the dumb Central Bank of The Bahamas won't say boo.... they don't care about doing their jobs as long as they get paid.....they are not accountable for their actions...so neither are are any of us banks."

I agree with you MadHatter.

Not only do we need to give Bahamians the same investment incentives but to eliminate the brain drain we will need to encourage sensible FDI.

BTW the WTO will require us to offer the same incentives to Bahamians.

There is nothing here for our smart Bahamians to come back to. Old minded thought process, complete resistance to change, feeling that young MUST respect their elders even if that stupid elder is holding them back.

Economist says...

So where is the Bahamas Civil Aviation Authority in all this?

Economist says...

I agree completely.

Further, our immigration policy is designed to make it uninviting for smart minds to set up here. Smart minds are the ones who create jobs and wealth.

And The Bahamas wants to control its airspace.

This is why most airlines are against us doing so.
