you forget that most of our ministers are/were lawyers. it is not in their interest to regulate this at all. the bulk of attorney's fees come from conveyance and they justify their percentage fee (as opposed to flat fees in many other countries) by saying they need to pay for title insurance. many countries don't require a lawyer to be as involved as we do - in the US the realtors handle most of the closings/paperwork etc. as long as the bahamian people continue to vote in lawyers to government nothing will change - the corruption and ineffectiveness means more butter on their bread.
we never had this problem when we had foreign (and by that i mean british) teachers in the school system - public and private. many of our elite, lawyers, politicians, etc reaped the benefit of british teachers - discipline in the schools, proper grammar for reading and writing, learning respect for others and themselves. then those that reaped the benefits became powerful and went all "bahamian only" in order to garner the vote of the masses and that Bahamianization has led to sub-par teachers. the standards are no longer there for being a teacher - even in some of the private schools where they have teachers who may be fluent in a language but never taught a day in their life. and this applies to foreign and bahamian - there are foreign teachers getting permits because their husbands are here, and no qualifications. the requirements are low. how can we possibly have a teacher in a school who can't pronounce their v's and w's, whose grammar is crap - and they are passing on bad language skills. we need to bring in the well trained foreign teachers again and raise the quality of education in this country. these poor kids have no hope. i have many friends at baha mar trying to hire and they are struggling at times because either people come in with an education but their presentation is horrendous - funky coloured hair, breasts popping out, pants too low - or they can't even put together a decent resume. in a luxury resort appearance and presentation is half the battle and we don't teach that in schools. these kids have no one to guide them - not at school, not at home, not in their communities. sad to see...
the only people these bus drivers are hurting when they park with their out to lunch signs is their own customers. the rest of us want them off the street. they are a nuisance, they have no respect for the roads or other drivers, so they are gaining no sympathy here. in other cities around the world you often have to walk several blocks to get to assigned bus (and taxi) depots - why are bahamians so darn lazy!! just walk - it will do you good. No buses should be allowed to stop on bay street - anywhere. they block traffic, and oftentimes they are running empty with only one or two pax. there needs to be so many more steps taken in regulating these buses.
well, i can only hope that this didn't happen at 9am because i passed at 10:10 am and the officer was lying on the ground with a few other officers there and there was no ambulance or other support - hate to think he was there for an hour waiting. definitely worth confirming timing and response I think.
wow - kevin. are you for real? if you don't like sesame street don't watch it. just because you are "christian" does not mean everyone else is. just because you are homo-phobic does not mean everyone else is. you can simply turn the tv off or put on spongebob for your kids (or you). but to say a programme should be removed because you live in a bubble - well, hmmm, you scare me. if "christians" such as you would be less judgemental and intolerant and instead would embrace that people are different and have the right to live their lives differently from yours, then maybe we could move towards peace in our distraught country. there is a real world out there - perhaps you should visit it at some point.
I am a little unclear - is this something for which the injections are required for life? or does a full treatment (how long is that exactly?) resolve the problem? The story is heartbreaking but I wish the journalist would have been a little more specific so that people could understand whether this would be a lifelong expense or a short term - it may help to motivate people to come forward and contribute funds.
exactly - civility trumps freedom of speech each time. this obsession that our Bahamian people have with videotaping and photograph other human beings in times of injury or distress and taking pleasure and entertainment in forwarding them and sharing them -well, it's just a sickness and really disappointing. i am beyond happy that the policemen did this and i think they will find that the majority of people would agree. good on them. keep it up. and shame on those of you who think it's okay to post and share photos of someone lying helpless on the road.
I have always been impressed by Dr. Rollins and having spent an hour in a one to one conversation with him at his office, I can say my only disappointment with him is that he is a PLP. I feel that his passion and courage are wasted there - as I told him directly. I don't align myself with any party but I know that we need more representatives like Dr. Rollins.
