Lol I love it when Bahamians bring up the UBP. The white man has been out of power for 50+ years now, and Sands/Symonette/et al. are still living rent-free in Bahamian's heads. How many of the UBP families are even still in the country? I guess the white devils are still the ones holding the black man down, nevermind 50+ years of majority rule.
I really hope that Bahamians are smart enough to realize that if it weren't for the UBP, this country would be comprised of nothing more than a few hamlets and fishing villages. Yeah there were racial issues (the PLP was no better in that regard), but give credit where credit is due. The Bahamas as we know it today would not exist without them, they were just as important as the PLP when it comes to creating the modern nation that we live in today.
The government needs to grow a spine and tell the EU/OECD to take a hike. The AML/CFT regulations that they have imposed in the past ~5 years are borderline insane, and they are not going to stop harassing the Bahamas until there is a corporate and income tax structure in place. The EU needs to go clean up their own house by clamping down on the Netherlands before they open their mouths about our financial regulations.
I cannot decide whether I hate the EU or the UN more; one has almost completely wrecked our financial services industry, and one is too busy trying to make Bahamians a minority in our own country by pressuring us to be flooded with Haitian refugees.
While the EU are at it, tell them to investigate the irregularities in Serbia's recent elections before they try to overthrow the Belarusian government. The hypocrisy of the EU knows no bounds, the UK was very wise to pull out of such a trash-tier organization.
Is there still a backlog in obtaining current results? How old are these cases that keep coming out? The Ministry was moving to address the backlog if my memory is correct, did they finally address it?
It is very refreshing to see someone else put how trivial this whole matter is in such succinct form.
Governments world-wide have realized that most of their populace are complete suckers that will let them have unlimited power over fear of something as small as the flu, and you can be guaranteed that they will never relinquish the power they now wield over their citizenry. Even if they do give it up, it will only be temporarily. All they need is a small false flag just to scare their population into letting them have their powers back.
This was a major test to define the state of humanity, and we failed drastically.
Thank God that Minnis hasn't had the idea to build Canada or New Zealand style camps yet lol.
Whether we like it or not, Minnis would have been damned if he did or didn't when it came to keeping the border closed. The choice is either you destroy your economy, or increase the risk of COVID being spread among your populace.
Reopening in July was absolutely the correct thing to do, we are a tourism based economy whether we like it or not, and this level of spending is completely unsustainable; however, I would have personally not allowed for the 72 hour loophole for travel to and from the US. By all accounts, the health visa process was working perfectly, and it was the Bahamians traveling to Florida taking advantage of the 72 hour testing exemption that are responsible for the resurgence in cases.
Either way, the cat is out of the bag at this point. We need to ditch this lockdown nonsense, destroying our economy for 365 deaths a year (I think our average is 1 death a day, correct me if I am wrong?) is complete foolishness. Has the government looked into hydroxychloroquine, regeneron's drug, or any other potential treatment? The effects of the crime pandemic that will coincide with sky-high rates of unemployment are going to be more disastrous than the effects of COVID. We are cutting our nose off to spite our face with lockdowns.
This man needs to run for Prime Minister. One of the few Bahamians consistently displaying critical thinking skills and an understanding of complex issues.
I hear your point, but one must look closely at the viability of third parties in our electoral system as well : for all of the foolishness that the Christie administration did in the time period of 2012-2017, a touch short of 60,000 Bahamians still voted for the PLP during the last election. If the FNM were to call a general election today, they would more than likely be able to pull in a similar number.
Those 60,000 voters were nothing but grassroots supporters for the PLP, the kind who will vote nothing but PLP for their entire lives. When you take into consideration that the PLP was able to pull in 60,000 votes without appealing to swing voters at all, it puts into perspective how hard third parties have it in our country. The FNM's grassroots turnout is probably a bit lower, but would still be similar nonetheless. The last third party to win a seat in a Bahamian election would be the BDM from the 70s if my memory is correct (not counting independent candidates). Even if all of the minor/fringe parties were to coalesce as one, their road to victory would still be going up a very steep hill.
This mentality right here is why the Bahamas will never improve until Bahamians take a good hard look in the mirror to realize why this country is truly in trouble. As the old saying goes, Bahamians vote governments out, not in, which is exactly why this country is screwed up today.
No government is ever going to please us 100%, so what do we do every time an FNM/PLP administration does something we don't like, send them out of office in an electoral landslide (which, mind you, some administrations have deserved it). Instead of looking at platforms/policies, Bahamians vote out of anger and frustration, which is why there are hardly any leaders with vision for the country today. They don't even have to provide a vision, only wait for the electorate to get sick and tired of the current government so they can cruise into power without ever actually having a plan.
There is a chance he may not even get the PLP nomination for the constituency, but there is more than likely an agreement in place for him to suddenly decide to tag along after all this time as an independent.
Important to remember that you are voting for the candidate, not the party, in our electoral system. That being said, I agree with you 100% in principle. No reason that you should be able to get elected under one party and cross the floor with out hearing from the people that put you there first. Whether we like it or not, most people are voting for the party logo (and their platform/agenda) on their ballot, they don't care whose name is next to it.
