Disappointing post from you sheeprunner. Gowon Bowe has plenty of credibility unlike this PLP administration. VAT although unpopular WAS necessary. Unfortunately the additional revenue has not been used wisely and the National Debt has continued to increase post VAT. The blame lies squarely at the feet of the PLP Mafia who are busy spending like there is no tomorrow and will continue to do so until they are booted out of office next May.
Mitchell does need to come clean on this because, on the face of it, his action has been bizarre to say the least. Don't expect full transparency, however - this is the PLP we are dealing with. The Mafia brothers and sisters will close ranks as usual. The silence from the Attorney General is deafening!
Just as Christie is now toning down the misplaced optimism over BahaMar, it's time for him to stop misleading his people over NHI. The Public Health Service is nowhere near ready to provide Catastrophic coverage for the populace at large and the private sector economy is nowhere near robust enough to pay for any substantial enhancement of existing public health coverage. It is time to get real Prime Minister.
"He also touted the deficit reduction that has occurred under his administration, saying that the deficit will decline to $141 million this fiscal year, a “$398 million improvement from the deficit of $539 million posted in 2012/2013.”
Is this supposed to bring us comfort? It is still a deficit thereby ADDING to the National Debt!
In any truly civilized and enlightened country men and women have equal rights across the board. No need for qualification or exceptions just plain equal rights. This is how it should be.
The increased Tax/NIB contributions may be mandatory but government will understand "you can't get blood out of a stone". If the cabinet decides to squeeze the working class still further then they risk the economy seizing up completely. In the short term, additional funding for NHI should come from a national Lottery and a reduction in government spending. Increased taxation can only be supported when the economy begins to grow again. Sustained economic growth is not possible under the PLP.
2016 is going to be a dreadful year for the Bahamian economy thanks to the greed and ineptitude of the PLP government. The country would have been doing well had this cabinet shown even a degree of competence and integrity. What we have now is an incomplete "White Elephant" of a resort on Cable Beach, a working class that is being over-taxed to pay for the excesses and incompetence of government, and an economy that is on its knees. That is the legacy of Perry Gladstone Christie and the PLP.
Alfred Gray is a National disgrace. How can the Bahamas progress as a Nation when we populate our top ministerial offices with persons like him, Leslie Miller, Shane Gibson etc? Is this the best we have to offer our people? The truth is that the country's best forward thinkers and leaders would never taint themselves by becoming politicians. So we have to suffer the likes of the afore-mentioned, pseudo ministers who would never cut it in a first world country. How many of our political leaders enter the political arena in order to better the country? How many are attracted so that they might enjoy the benefit of underhand deals, free loans and a quick route to a brand new gated house out West? No answer required!
