Tal, no doubt this $1.2m figure doesn't take into account the loss of productivity suffered by the business community and the public sector on referendum day. The real cost will probably be closer to the $3.1m you mention.
The whole Jitney bus system in New Providence is an absolute joke. Both the PLP and FNM have failed miserably to tackle this vexing problem. The driving standards of many of the drivers is disgraceful. From speeding to stopping without warning to diving with hazard lights on. Why are these drivers allowed to get away with it? How many more pedestrians must die at the hands of these unruly drivers? Why is it taking so long to create an orderly bus corporation and end this corrupt franchise system? It can only be because Bahamians have become so used to inferior service and governments that really don't give a damn.
The PLP owes the Nation an apology not only over the vote but for portraying itself as a creditable force for change at the last election. This Party prayed on the gullible within the electorate, pretending to them that they had the answers to crime, the economy, national health etc, etc. They told lie after lie on the campaign trail making outlandish promises that anyone with a grain of knowledge of the Party's history and past performance in office, would have known was fantasy. They rubbed salt into the wound by holding a pointless referendum wasting $1.2m dollars of public money. Approaching the half way stage of their 5 year tenure they are behind on every single initiative. They have delivered nothing and accounted for nothing. And Wilchcombe believes the Party owes the Nation an apology over the Vote!!!! This is the least of it! If the PLP had any honour, the PM and the entire Cabinet should resign forthwith on the grounds of their rank incompetency.
You have to admit that Rollins has a valid point. In addition, government still hasn't resolved how these new "legalized" web shop operations are going to bank their cash. The mainstream local banks have indicated they are going to have a problem accepting deposits from web shops and we haven't received any clarification yet from the Attorney General. This should be the focus of the debate. How do you make illegal money suddenly legal within a banking system that is forced by industry norms to adopt "best practice" in all of its affairs? What a mess!
A sober assessment from Moodys but their optimism going forward is questionable. This administration does not have the political will to properly implement and enforce VAT and so the revenue gain that Moodys is projecting is probably way off the mark. Expect our rating to get worse before it gets better.
It's just one factor that will cause him the election. The Party's abject failure on the crime front, it's imposition of VAT next year, the side deals for cronies and friends, and PGC's dereliction of all leadership responsibility will persuade all but the mindless PLP diehards to reject the party at the ballot box in 2017.
Don't worry, a pronouncement on the matter from the Nation's leader is "imminent". Believe that if you will. Basically PGC is just waiting for some bigger news story to develop that will take the focus off the Stellar Waste issue and then he will sanction a short press release saying that the investigation has revealed that the LOI was merely a non-binding letter of encouragement and as such there is no need for Mr. Wells to resign. You heard it here first!
Bell says: "The real thing is that the overall crime rate continues to decline, but people do not want to hear that" What planet is this man living on? Does he realize how foolish he sounds?
The PLP has "gone back to the drawing Board" on crime according to the Prime Minister. This is another way of saying - those election promises we made that we had the solutions to crime in The Bahamas were untrue. We have no idea how to solve the crime problem.
