I believe few Bahamians relish the prospect of five years with either Christie or Minnis at the helm. The PLP is corrupt to its core and cannot change just as a "leopard cannot change its spots". The FNM is no longer the party of responsible and efficient government - it has morphed into a lightweight and rudderless version of the PLP. Neither party is motivated to act in the best interests of the Nation and both are driven by vested interests. If ever there was a time for a credible third party to make its mark in Bahamian politics it is surely now. Branville McCartney is the face and the voice of the DNA but that is the problem. He is perceived as a "one man show". He mostly speaks in populist soundbites but he has no proven track record in government and at this point in time he has no "big hitters" in his party. Sure his party will mop up a very significant protest vote and might exceed the 8% of total vote earned last time round. However, he and everyone else with any savvy knows that this will not translate into more than a couple of seats in a PLP dominated HOA. The only solution is for an electoral pact between the opposition parties so that disaffected PLP voters have only one alternative choice in each constituency.
Why state the obvious? Of course Bahamians can keep their existing health covers - this is not yet a dictatorship! The real issue is that if employers maintain existing health covers for the benefit of their employees then both they and their employees will end up paying for cover they don't need. It will be interesting to see what government does with the existing civil service health cover after the election.
It's time for a new style of politics in The Bahamas. The PLP and the FNM between them have shafted Bahamians for over 40 years. Both parties need to be abolished. Unfortunately changing the mindset of an electorate that still believes these jokers are there to represent their best interests is the biggest stumbling block to change. It really is time for these parties and their useless leaders and ministers to just go away. I agree with Rollins that this whole NHI scheme is nothing more than a carrot to dangle in front of an uneducated PLP voting block. Catastrophic cover is what is really needed. Unfortunately the only sector that can pay for that is the private sector who are being taxed into oblivion. You cannot get blood out of a stone but these idiots in government will promise that you can in order to get re-elected and the chance to steal the remaining crumbs from the Nation's cookie jar.
Beginning to think LBT has a split personality. Will the real Loretta please stand up because we are getting confused as to who we are dealing with? Loretta, your public performances over the last few weeks have been bizarre to say the least.
What a depressing outlook. Bahamas will become a failed state with five more years of PLP mismanagement. Those with options are contemplating their exit strategy should the electorate commit national suicide.
I'm guessing that for now Sandals is looking to preserve cash flow in what is its quietest spell of the year. However, this could well be the forerunner to an ultimate exit if staff are not prepared to face the harsh economic realities of life.
The DNA has not evolved since the last general election and it has ran out of time to be a serious alternative come May 2017. The DNA will pick up the protest vote, will probably increase its share of the total vote but will end up with only a few MP's at best. The sad reality is that a vote for the DNA will be tantamount to a vote for the PLP.
