I am in support of a value added tax system. I say go for it. The 3800 companies that this would apply to can clearly afford it. The small man businesses would not be affected and this will be another resource to alleviate our debt and build profit once more for the country.

You know what else just occurred to me? The way these questions are worded, they don't address the legalization of the number houses. Am I the only one just turning on the light on that specific caveat or is this well understood by others? I mean it addresses the webshops, but to my understanding the webshops are not the same thing as the number house. True/False?

Therefore if my renewed understanding is correct, whether there is a yes or no, the number houses are not and will not be addressed and thus will continue to be operated on an illegal basis. ? ? Can someone clear this up for me please, or is this what the FNM is stating?

No one is making this political besides you Mr. Christie. If the FNM had said they supported gambling I suppose we wouldn't be having this conversation right now. It is obvious to even the slowest of the slow that you are pushing for a yes vote and it is appearing to those that use that lump three feet above their bottoms that you are "condoning illegality." Be a leader and say what you support. Stop being a coward and leaving what happens to the Bahamian public by saying, "well that's what YA'LL voted for." (don't blame me attitude) stop being a punk!

By the way your dubious means of campaigning ("visiting each and every island") feigned by your objective of "making sure the government has no horse is the race" is seen for what it is too, a campaign for the yes vote.

Mr. Christie if you were appropriately displaying your feelings of being neutral you would have closed the shops in accordance with the current law on the books. If you were smart you should have closed the shops and give the addictive gamblers something to campaign for in a yes vote, as their withdrawal would probably make them pretty convincing campaigners. I assure you if Hubiggety was proposing to do this vote as you propose he would have closed the shops no matter who didn't like it, no matter the expense.

i strongly advocate the no vote! Not for the proposed reasons of the FNM that the wording is not specific, but for gambling's current and likely amplified effect on society once it is legalized. Have you ever not eaten because your parents gambled away the money? Have you ever been evicted because your parents gambled away the money? Have you ever not been able to attend school because your school fee was in the pocket of the numbers man? We as Bahamians are a small country with few socioeconomic resources to help those who fall. I think it is ridiculous to compare our nation to the poor state of affairs in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and the like of other poor countries that allow gambling. Good for them, this is the Bahamas and we have to pay attention to Bahamian issues and their futuristic effects on OUR society.

Lol man sounds like a plan that may fly in this Bahamaland as of late.

Mr. Christie,

I do implore you to please listen to what you are saying if not as a sensible person, then as a lawyer. The numbers racket is illegal. If you had two sisters living in a one bedroom with three children each and no running water or electricity selling drugs, should they not be arrested for their attempts at employment? Do we only look at the numbers racket and not see how harmful it is to the society as drugs? I know you and many others may not like my comparison, and may feel I am comparing apples to oranges, but they are all fruit and and they are each illegal.

You cannot applaud illegal activity to solve your unemployment problem. You cannot make irresponsible statements as, "...these people will either have to go deeper underground illegally OR we (the government) will have to find alternative employment for them." This type of encouragement leads to a deduced attitude that illegal activity is okay IF (fill in the blank). A society is run by laws. We make not like or agree with them all based on our individual nuances, but they keep law and order.

You my dear Mr. Christie are already over the slippery slope, perhaps if you reach for the law it may bring you and the rest of us you are dragging now with you back to order.

There should be a conversion to a shift system (day and night workers). The shift system will allow for salaries only. And if overtime is needed there would be very, very, very little room or applicability for it as on a shift system someone is always supposed to be available.

As far as the workers threatening to turn off the electricity or failing to respond when duty calls. They should be fired for failure to comply with contract agreements. Bahamians have a poor sense of what a worker is required to do according to job description. We are a biggity people and believe that what we 'want' to do is what our job description entails. Its a job with 'predetermined' expectations.

Isn't umemployment high, I'm sure there are lots of people sitting at home right now waiting for an opportunity to do what some of these with high school certificates do when they feel like it.

You are right dacy it isn't funny, but my goodness I have to laugh to keep from crying. This is some serious stuff in the hands of a fickle voting block.

Man TalRussell I hope you caught the news tonight to hear what the PM thinks as far as closing down the number houses before or even after the vote. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time! :-) The PM said how dare we close down these businesses that employ about 4,000 people. These people would then be out of jobs! lol lol i hope the next time the drug dealer gets arrested that they accept his argument that by arresting him he would be out of his job. lol lol Illegal is illegal man. I would think a lawyer like the PM would understand what that word means and the actions that should occur when something is found to be illegal.

And by the way, wouldn't this great PLP government find them a job? Isn't that what they promised if elected on May 7th? LOL I would think that the rich number bosses would definitely be able to provide a severance pay, or will they also be in rawson square protesting for their illegal severance and the MPs will be in parliament rowing over how to 'bailout' the severance pay for illegal work! LOL LOL

Please do something about this ridiculous overtime. Its almost as though people can bank their salaries and live on overtime (tips). LOL This is ridiculous. A shift system needs to be implemented quickly!
