So which one is it PM: At the verdict of the referendum you ordered the webshops closed! i suppose you did that to please the masses. because the attorney and your web shop friends told you they would be filing the legitimate injunction. Now that the law has been enforced you want no part of it because it is not your job? Nottage says crime is not his job? So please tell us what is your job? Because too often the newspapers are quoting you as saying, "I will handle xyz personally." You seem to be selective on what is and isn't your job.
I will keep posting this: Stop telling the police to do better, give them better so they can do better! Increase their pay (stop spending on buildings), increase their workforce, increase their resources (cars, phones, guns, etc), and increase the quality of their training. enforce the law (no matter how small the infraction white collar or violent)! Create a subunit for only tourist areas. Build a bigger, more rehabilatative prison! Increase the number of programs that work with prisoners when they are released. increase the quality of education in the land!
The students are right, they do have a right to sit in the House of Assembly, disrupting proceedings is another story. The police are supposed to only act when something like that happens.
The number of protests Rawson Square has seen speaks to the unhappiness of the people. Oh PM Christie, your ankle biters are waiting for leadership.
Ummm, not to be rude, but do you only follow the musings of your own mind? The Bahamas as the rest of the world underwent a global recession over the last few years. If you ask me, you should thank the FNM government for leading us and allowing us to hold on at the level that we have. I have many American friends who were laid off and haven't worked in 4 years!
For a country that depends on someone else from another country spending their dollar on us, The Bahamas has held its own. These are hard times globally and if I must say the Bahamas has done its fair share and better than most.
The Christie Government keep trying to make an edifice or something they can say they built: the 150 bed hospital, a renovated house of parliament, a bust of MLK in Bimini, foolishness, foolishness, and more foolishness.
You know what is a realistic dream that the Christie administration should do and focus on for the rest of their time as government.....increase the pay of police officers, increase the number of trained/qualifed police personnel, build a better/bigger prison, increase youth rehabilitation, increase the quality of education, and increase the opportunities to go abroad and become qualified on a tertiary level.
I promise you they will have enough to keep them busy if they do that and it would make a world of good for the present citizens, and future well-being of this country.
Now, now TalRussell, I have to remind you that Dr. Minnis, when he was Minister of Health, was responsible for instituting what will be soon known as Telemedicine so that the Family Islands could have access to health services that are financially limiting due to cost of flights, and also increasing the accuracy and access to determine who needs to be seen on an emergent basis. This particularly has a lot to do with diagnostic capability. Many things were done.
In shutting down the webshops it reinforces the following of the law that in our Bahamian society is too commonly felt to be "do what you like". This while it may seem trivial is also showing that all laws should be followed and any breach of them will be taken seriously.
When the sentiment is driven home to Bahamians that all laws are to be respected hopefully that thought will also transcend into the laws that deal with violent infractions.
It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree, it is the law and there is a proper place and protocol one must follow to oppose it.
Again, the employment argument holds no water for me. I don't care if you are employing thousands, illegal is illegal. And it also stands that while those people should have never sought illegal work in the first place, they sure have had ample time to try and secure legal employment since the decision of the referendum. This was inevitable. While the job market is tough right now, those people should have been looking.
TalRussell I am proud of your bipartisan assessment as I know how hard that must have been for you to call out your beloved PLP brethren.
The only thing I will add is that Bahamians need to stop saying, "well we need to give so and so a chance" This chance mentality is exactly what that word means a chance. Would you take a chance with your life or a guarantee with your life? And yes, nothing is guaranteed, but everything with the PLP is a chance. As many of us are now learning that chance initially is not thought to affect you directly, but the life of the country affects as all individually on some level.
For those that voted DNA, again I will say it, voting for a 3rd party that will never become elected makes no sense to me. Protest should be done vocally in the form of letters or protest, but NEVER in the voting booth, that is sensible democracy. A reminder, we live under a parliamentary system, the majority of seats will win the PM seat! This is how our government works, please remember that the next time you wish your vote to have a "say".
