Someone handing out free rose colored glasses to the crowd? I don't know about you but my fear of crime is still pretty high, always looking over your shoulder, thinking twice about going out at night etc etc. Crime might be down from the proverbial killing spree that seemed to be rampant a few weeks ago but the murder count is still up vs last year and it will take a while of consistent results for people to let their guard down a bit.............................................................. . I'm happy there has been a lull and always appreciative of the work of the RBPF, seems strange that we can just turn the murder light switch off for a few weeks but hope it stays quiet over the Holiday Season.
It's a strange one. Some aspects of the bill could benefit Bahamians, some could very well hurt us. Not sure why in the world they would allow auto approval of work permits after 14 days (what if the application gets lost on someone's desk), and I thought it only applied to the original business creator, but section 7.3 says "and any in-house professional designated." .
I could see how some new business/industry types could spur on growth and breathe some new life into our markets but seems like Bahamians are trying to make some of the listed industries work and grow here without foreign help - LENO Wealth Management etc. I would like to see us first look at incentivizing local Bahamians to start these industries rather than jump right to foreigners................................................................................................................ ........................................... . ... Are they going to designate some zones as Commercial Enterprise Zones and offer free crown land as well? The bill makes mention of zone designation then "economic incentives" to the specified zone so who knows how far that will go?

I agree with "this is ours" and "porcupine" trying to make an argument that its better for this person and that person that we all buy brand new vehicles is pretty poor. The reality, as stated, is a new car is a luxury item most of us cannot afford. Globalization is real in the 242 and not going anywhere, those that had an advantage based on limited shipping options, logistics etc have no choice but to adapt somehow.
Terrible news after a fresh alert from the US that was advising citizens not to visit Cuba because of dangers and embassy personnel falling ill. Add to the fact that some unknowing people think The Bahamas is inaccessible due to the recent hurricanes...
Instead of looking to rebuild mangroves why doesn't the government take an actual & current stance on the mangrove destruction in Bimini. You need to have sense to know where to replant mangroves, they won't grow on love beach with a 6 ft swell battering them. How bout take a study of where important mangrove densities are work to protect them instead of letting developers (Bahamian and Foreign) set a bulldozer on them.
The world is shrinking, anyone can buy anything and have it imported privately. Food wholesalers, furniture stores, car dealers all suffer from this fact. Add in the rampant dose of "make-shift" businesses, fly by night businessmen and those undercutting the system, and anyone trying to make an honest living suffers. This mass of dudes that pay no business license, no taxes, no fees, no insurance go on to hurt even the tourism industry by undercutting legit tour operators and even hotels with the shady airbnbs. Everyone needs a level playing field but people would rather get a deal. $$
My thing is, the country is in dire need of an active, motivated, and outspoken Environment Minister right now. With already existing issues with Bimini and the Mangroves Destruction, Oil continuously seeping out from Clifton and now apparently also in many points between dealing with fuel/oil supply lines; the ticking time bomb at the dump - with Bahamar also stepping on our necks to remediate; Environmentally related issues in Hurricane ravaged areas, Environmental Issues dealing with new cruise ports on Ocean Cay and East Grand Bahama, and finally...maybe...possibly...hopefully...some sort of sensible, sustainable recycling plan for all the trash we dump in Nassau.
Seems like you get the best discounts when you don't pay your bills. Reward those that don't pay while all else suffer...no interest on unpaid Real Property Tax Arrears, breaks on your high BEC bills...it goes on and on.
Why is it taking the Minister of Environment so long to make a decision on the protection of existing mangroves in Bimini? Everyone is on this wait and see agenda. Resorts World has occupied enough of the Natural Environment of Bimini, let the hotel sustain itself as is and make the existing mangroves an MPA protecting it from everyone. As for the foam, seems like the core of the floating dock was foam but had a hard casing around it, the casing cracked in the storm, probably rubbed against the supports etc and broke apart. That part might not have been expected but for God's sake don't sit back and just let the tide/wind take the foam out to sea.
