Please explain the benefits of taking the vaccine that is beyond the benefits of wearing a mask, social distancing and avoiding large crowds? And the actual effects/benefits of the vaccines are not yet known and neither is the timeframe for the effective period of the vaccine. So NO, not everyone should take the vaccine at this time.
So Quasi Thompson comes to attack the PLP’s plan but makes more outrageous statements. How did he conclude that a 2% reduction in the VAT for a period of 1 year will lead to a $100 million loss in VAT revenue. The reduction can, in fact lead to an increase in revenue because if you increase the disposable income of consumers, you also increase their confidence and they will spend more. So if you are giving them back $100 million and they spend it at a 10 % tax rate, government will actually realize an additional $10 million in the first instance. And because of the multiplyer effect of having this additional $100 million circulating in the economy for at least a year government will realize an additional 10 percent in revenue, every time a dollar exchanges hands. Trump proved this by cutting taxes over four years and Joe Biden is attempting to follow suit by trying to get more money into the hands of consumers veith his trillion dollar stimulus package. When government acts as a giant, overpowered vacuum and sucks every dollar out of the economy before it can circulate and generate new wealth, then that is when there is a problem. A government induced, overtaxed, stagnant economy. And it would lead to inflation and high unemployment, and then recession or stagflation.
Rupert Roberts is ‘ball busting.’ Notice he says he already pays his workers the $210 minimum wage but not the $250 wage he proposes. He knows this will be suicide for many of his smaller competitors and Roberts is basically ‘good eying’ the government to destroy his competition. Think of a mom and pop shop... some that doesn’t even turn over $250 a day. They may not have any employees, but If Roberts forces them to close, then not only does he inherit their customers, but he then has more leeway to increase his prices.. AND AS For VAT reduction if only temporary.. this is dangerous. A serious, caring government would seek to eliminate customs duties completely as was the intention when vat was introduced, even if it requires increasing vat to 15%. A long term reduction/elimination in customs duties will not lead to a reduction in government revenue. Consumers will still have to spend the savings they realize from the reduction in taxes so not only will the reduction in taxes lead to an increase in consumer spending, but a corresponding increase in government revenue. And that is why most governments reduce taxes when they want to stimulate the economy. So instead of a consumer paying $25 tax on $100 groceries in Super Value, they will only be paying $15 tax on the same goods. But they now have an additional $10 to spend in Super Value and the government will get an additional $1.50 when they spend. And Super Value can now increase its staff salaries, reduce its prices (because of lower taxes) or do a combination of other things because it has more working capital. More money remains circulating in the economy and so there’s the potential for economic growth.
The GDP of most countries is down and has been declining for the past 20 years. And the short answer for the reason dor it is because productivity is down and has also been declining for the past 20 years. And so this has led to steady inflation and rapid increases in the cost of living over the year. So workers around the world, especially those who live in industrial nations, compensate or make up the difference between inflation and maintaining their standards of living by qualifying themselves for pay increases. They go to college and get degrees it take classes or attend seminars or lecture sessions and qualify themselves for pay increases. But productivity remains decreased and stagnant or declining and so inflation must rear its ugly head again and eventually it will be accompanied be unemployment and sooner or later recession. But in the lower echelons of the workforce, there are those who depend on minimum wage to keep their wages propped up. College and classes and other skills improvement mechanisms do not work for them, so they cry out (to politicians) to raise the minimum wage. And not all who are caught up in the minimum wage quagmire are entry-level workers. In fact many are seasoned workers who have been in the workforce for many years. But because the employment opportunities in this country are so limited, many find themselves moving horizontally in the workforce as there is very little upward mobility. And so the politicians and political parties also play this game, making false ir unfiltered promises. Promises they cannot keep. And some will cut off their faces to spite their noses. Joe Biden promised a $15 minimum wage and he wished his nose was bigger to hide his face as he knows it’s almost impossible to deliver a $15 minimum wage. Let not the PLP fall into the same trap.
First of all many people confuse "minimum wage' and "livable wage" and they are not the same. A livable wage is an amount a person requires to live above the poverty level where he/she can pay all their essential bills related to the basic necessities of living, including but not limited to food and shelter. A minimum wage, on the other hand, is what a person can expect to earn when he/she enters the job market or continues to be employed at entry-level and may be lacking sufficient qualifications, training or potential to gain further training and or education to advance up the ladder. The minimum wage is usually a balance between what a worker deems his needs are and what an employer is willing to pay for his skill set and the job(s) he performs. A minimum wage will usually be below a 'livable wage' because if it is set too high, not only can this lead to unemployment and inflation but it can make a portion of the workforce unemployable. The wages they desire is too great for the jobs they perform and or their qualifications. Unfortunately many governments and those wishing to win the government have used minimum wage as a means of enticing voters to vote for them. Some find that after they win elections, the wages promised are unrealisitic and cannot be implemented, especially in a weak and depressed economy. Joe Biden is facing a similat situation, where he promised a $15.00 minimum wage and now finds it near impossible to implement. He has now backed down on his promise saying it will only be for Federal government workers and where a worker cannot be paid the $15 minimum wage, other means of boosting his/her income will be explored.

It is bad enough when Bahamians default on contracts with the government, but when foreigners are allowed to come into the country and do this type of thing; when foreigners come here and squander taxpayer money, it is even worse. Imagine the opportunity cost to the college and to the students by not having use of that building for these many years. There was a similar situation with a building od the Sandilands compound. Was that issue ever resolved and the building completed? These companies should be bonded and insured to the amount of the contract.
