In addition to stiffer penalties, the government needs to implement Drivers Education and dDrivers School for offenders. Firstly at least 90 percent of everyone leaving high school will find themselves behind the wheel of a vehicle at some time in their lives, at least until driverless vehicles become the norm. So government should implement Driver's Education as part of the 12th-grade curriculum in all government schools, even if students have to pay a portion of the fees for actual driving classes (practical) or leave it as an option for when they graduate. And secondly, from the way many drivers are conducting themselves on the roads, obviously some are bypassing proper driving schools or need retraining in their driving skills (and habits). So when persons are charged with infractions such as runni9ng a red light, driving in a manner dangerous to the public, speeding, they will be sent to driving classes as part of the penalty. The classes will focus on the fraction the driver committed as well as general safety on the streets. And those who cannot pay the monetary penalty can opt to take additional classes. That will be a great step in making the streets safer, and eventually, it may come to a point where drivers can have licences suspended for repeated infractions like speeding and running the red light or driving while intoxicated..
The property is the greatest misery! So you paying government 35-45% duty on items used to construct a home/ building. Then they start charging 1-21/2% property tax on that property as soon as it is completed. Then the government also charges 5 % on overdue balances. And this is what really gets property owners into trouble. When they cannot afford to pay the property tax and they get hit with this accumulated interest. Banks are paying 0 interest on deposits and government own bonds are paying less than 5 %.
Sandilands does a good job in stabilizing patients and restoring their mental health. However the facility does not have enough resources, including trained manpower to do counseling and outreach that should accompany medication. Many families abandon, at least partially , family members who become mentally ill. They do this because of the stigma associated with mental illness, the taxing burden of having to care for a mental patient or they just don’t feel safe having that family member living in the home. And some mental patients don’t want to be confined to a structure or to rules. They feel safer roaming the streets. Malnutrition also contributes to mental illness and can increase its severity. Many adult Bahamians are not eating properly. Their diet consists of fast foods thy have little or no nutrition. They also eat no fruits or vegetables. Persons on medication need a good and balanced diet to stay healthy. Many Bahamians are self-medicating with street drugs and alcohol. Some know something is wrong and rather than seeking help they mask it with drugs and alcohol. Other are under stress and also abuse substances to try cope. Not too many police officers are trained in responding to a call that involves a mental patient who may become violent and dangerous. They respond as if it is a criminal. The main goal should be to calm and/or restrain the individual and get medical care. Family support and affection plays a major part in the recovery of a mentally ill patient. Many young people are growing up without love and affection. And many are victims of the absent father. So they try to fulfill the need for love and affection and nurturing with substitutes. This may lead to anger, gang involvement, feelings of abandonment drugs and alcohol abuse and other antisocial behavior. The feeling that no one cares.
Well this country always likes to follow in the footsteps of the United States. A few years ago that country was having a high incidence of police involved shootings, especially against Blacks and other minorities. Then several police officers were not only charged , but convicted of unlawful killing. And the number of killings declined to the lowest level in decades. And while the killings in the US may have been racially driven, here the killings are due to lack of professionalism and/or overly aggressive officers who decided to take the law into their own hands. And usually after one of these incidents is a spike in violent crime. So while one must be careful not to strip police of their powers to effectively carry out their duties, the country cannot allow officers to become executioners. The murder count was down significantly last year, and figures thus far indicate it may be even lower this year. This confirms that murders can not only be reduced significantly, but the lower numbers sustained.
There must be a system of checks and balances otherwise the system will become corrupted. Officers must be accountable for their actions otherwise there would be no need for them to follow the rules or operate within the law. The difference between accidentally and wrongfully killing someone.
The school should have had a general assembly and/or grief counselling sessions to put to rest any rumours surrounding the student's death. But some children will use any excuse to demonstrate bad behaviour and shouldn't be allowed to get away with it. But at the same time, one has to be sensitive to the students and to the family who are truly grieving.
Actually you are the bigger of ALL jacka$$es. First of all the commissioner should NOT have to wait on a coroner's court to determine if one of his officers acted unlawfully. An internal investigation should take place and the officer should be put on leave, pending the outcome of the coroner's court and/or any other legal action that may be taken. And now go check go your mother about the two hot headed illiterate law breaking yard chickens..because one is still missing.
