Many countries, even if Africa are legalizing small amounts of marijuana in the hopes that it will not only reduce crime, but also weaken the drug cartels that spur crime by cutting into their revenue. Some believe wat on drugs is too costly and by at least decrimilizing small amounts of marijuana deemed for personal use will also free up more police man-hours to deal with more serious crime. Holland has decriminalized all streetst drugs in small amounts and has seen a decline in crime, at least in the short term. A good portion of crime in this country is drug related.

The us debt ($22 Trillion) to GDP jumped from 76% under Barak Obama to 99% in September last year under Donald Trump. And with the massive tax cuts and a slowing economy that ratio will definitely exceed 100 if not this year, before Trump finishes his four year term. The biggest problem here is government seeks to place the tax burden on local Bahamians while allowing international and foreign businesses to come here and pay less taxes. K P Turnquest and his economically illiterate sidekick plan to exempt banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions from paying business license fees. They claim the revenue will be made up in other ways but have yet to explain. The attorney general is threatening the web shops with court action as he seeks to squeeze more tax dollars out of them but cruise ships make hundreds of visits to these islands with casinos wide open and pay neither business license nor taxes. At lease Pindling had the sense to make them close their casinos and stores whilst they were in ports in the Bahamas.

John says...

First of all when the Bahamas becomes a member of the WTO, it will be required to relax its immigration policies, not strengthen them. Secondly as a member of Caricom, did Minnis ever discuss this vexing illegal immigration problem with member states? What have other Caribbean nations done or are willing to do to help eliminate economic hardship in Haiti. Rounding up migrants or intercepting them at sea is costly and not effective enough. Especially with Donald Trump in the White House. The Bahamas is now the preferred country to run to.

This woman just loves beating up on authority, ok men bashing. And most of the items on her list could have been resolved in house. Roaches and rodents are an indication of improper janitorial duties, for example, not only ensuring that all food stuffs are cleaned up properly but that the garbage bins are far enough away from the buildings and also dumped regularly. And the best control for mold, which is common in this climate is bleach. But most people prefer to use the sweet or strong smelling disinfectants that have little or no effect. And the two missing louvres out the new windows. If it was vandalism and no one admitted who did it, everyone in that classroom would have to come up with one or two dollars to have the windows replaced. The air conditioning and the leaking roof and furniture shortages, yes take the Minister and ministry to task for it but calling a strike vote was premature and overkill. Many believe the schools are in better condition than they were in in quite some time. Now what Belinda and her union is going to do about getting the national grade averages up?

John says...

The UK plans to exit the EU on March 29 this year. Their major bone of contention was membership in the Union was making their boarders too porous and watering down the benefits of being a British citizen. But yet this country seems to bow to this union with both knees and go to extremes to meet their demands. The whole intent is to make it most difficult for some countries to comply then they use strong arm tactics. Doesn’t Donald Trump do as he pleases?

So why did the Tribune exclude the portion that says government plans to exempt banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions from paying business license fees so as to be in compliance with EU requirements. Ever heard such garbage coming from a cash strapped government? SMH

John says...

So do you know while drinking Carl Bethel is threatening to take the Web Shops to court for more taxes, Doting and lost KP Turnquest is considering exempting banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions from paying business license fees? He claims it is to satisfy EU requirements. What kind of darkness is this? You taxing Bahamian companies more and taxing entire sectors of the economy that are mostly foreign owned and lucrative and high profits less? You can’t be serious! Vote they as$$ out!

So businesses under $100,000 no longer pay business license fees? And what about companies that sell Vat Exempt items like medicines and some food products? These items will not be in the calculation of their business license fees?

One of the problems was too many of them were getting pregnant by students. Another problem was some of them (male teachers) were impregnating students then leaving the children fatherless when their contract expired.
