All these missteps and fails by the Minnis led FNM shows that they came into office behind by the wrong set of people. Despite they, themselves having little or no experience. And then they ingnored advice from knowledgeable and experienced persons who were willing to offer guidance. They have a financial retard in the Ministry of Finance, who is trying to micromanage everything and requiring the duties and other established government departments to have his seal of approval like he has more powers than the prime minister. The Bahamian people want it to be ‘The People’s Time.’ They want this FNM Government to succeed. They are battle wary and financially burnt out. They don’t want helicopters flying over their bed at 3 in the morning claiming to be looking for weed, ok marijuana, when there are more pressing crime issues. Minnis must change the perception that he is mean and stingy when it comes to dealing with Bahamians but more accommodating to foreigners.
Don’t allow the opportunity to maximize growth potential in the tourism sector to slip away. Get hotel rooms filled. Bahamians employed and off social welfare or unemployment. A healthy tourist sector can boost other parts of the economy. Then put the IAAF meet back on the schedule so the government does not appear mean and stingy when it comes to Bahamians. The stadium is in need of use and will require much more to repair if it just sits there and deteriorates.
Shouldn’t the focus now be on growing the economy rather than trying to squeeze every last dollar out of successful businesses. Come on! Tourism is begging for attention all over the country. Just drive down Bay Street on any Sunday morning. This discrimination of taxing Bahamians more and foreigners less MUST stop. And it WILL stop because this new generation of Bahamians will NOT tolerate it. Minnis and KP should be building investor confidence and not listening to someone hiding in the background telling them to break (Bahamians) balls.
Several districts in the YS school have moved to a four day school week in an effort to cut costs and ease the cries of teachers who say they are under paid. And while the move to four Day school weeks is only expected to save 5 percent in costs it points to a bigger problem in America where more money is spent on schools in rich affluent areas and less on inner city under performing schools. And this makes the situation worse before the underperforming schools who have shortage on supplies and schools that lack proper maintenance and also they have problems recruiting qualified teachers and other staff.
The alcohol and substance abuse in this country, and among young people especially, is alarming. Everyone is trying to escape reality or some form of painful situation or memory. And while drug use and abuse may help numb the feelings for a while, eventually the cart will get ahead of the horse and this is when the mental crash occurs. And even prescribed medication has its limits, especially if it is not accompanied by counseling and lifestyle changes when necessary. One college instructor described some of his students' lifestyle as "that sense of not being." When they are in the dorm, they are thinking about being in class and when they do eventually come to class they spend that time planning for the weekend, or for another class or for some other event, so they are not really tuned in to the lecture. They are not living in the present here and now...The sense of not being..the habit of escaping reality.
It is good to see the ministry is forward thinking and planning on making public schools internet ready so school children can become tech savvy. Eventually students will have to bear the cost of their own tablets/laptops because they will barely last a year or two and there’s always the possibility of schools being broken into and electronic items stolen. But it is a very good start and with government promising to make all public parks Wi-Fi zones children should have no excuse for not doing homework
If the Minnis led FNM administration was to lose the government today there are several MP’s and other government appointees who can easily find themselves before the courts. Not necessarily because of corruption or mismanagement in office but because of the sloppy and unprofessional manner they are actually handling the people’s business. And of course the Web shops fiasco will be among the top of the list. Why so much excessive taxes on black owned Bahamian web shops and not a fraction of a percent increase in taxes on the foreign owned casinos. Ok wait now, they changed their word and now say they needed to control the growth and profitability of the web shops. Originally they said the government was broke and needed additional revenue. Then this over-the-hill empowerment project. (Aka Urban Renewal 3.0). Exactly who will benefit from it and who is the intended target? It appears like, with their housing program, little or none in The projected areas will qualify. So businesses, especially, in those areas will find themselves at a greater disadvantage having to fight against New money and new businesses. And the red tape for homeowners in areas may not fare much better. Then while government is claiming to have removed customs duties off clothing and shoes, again it only giving the exemption to businesses that are current on all their taxes. Yet thei claim is they realize the number of clothing and shoes stores that are going out of business and this is to help them. So the stores that were struggling all along now have to compete against the bigger stores that pay no duty while they still have to pay. Even the UBP never exercise this level of economic discrimination, and so blatantly. Then there’s the Lucayan hotel in Freeport... was this the best option for government to buy it with the possibility of having to spend millions to get it market ready and open? Wouldn’t it have been better to get a company, like Wynn, or some other hotel operator to the table and government make a one time spend to secure the sale of the hotel to them and let them do the repairs and operate the hotel? And the people of the Southern Bahamas in the main time say they have been totally ignored after hurricane devastation. Then there’s the total melt down of the BEC board. What is the real reason behind it? And let’s not forget Oban? And these black hawk helicopters buzzing sleeping communities and claiming to be looking for drugs and drugs dealers. Roads are still in shambles. Bahamas air at least two weekends of 16 hours flight delays.. a new record? National Debt still climbing So what then are the successes of this government. Well they did take the burden of carnival off the tax payers backs. The murder rate continues to by down but may still be double digit.
