Yes they s government house is in financial disarray. Simply because they have dumb and inexperienced people in key positions that don’t know nothing about nothing. How can Government still be charging some merchants duty on clothing and shoes when they went to the people’s parliament to make these items duty free? So by government itself operating outside the law, it is giving more latitude to persons who are also operating outside the law at the expense of established Bahamian businesses. And once you destroy the established local economy, like someone did a few years ago, downgrades would be among the least of your worries.
Personally I think the Bahamian people needs to look under the table and see who is holding hands (or getting feel up) with this Lucayan deal. When the government cancels the only major sporting event on its calendar for at least another year, and reduced its school uniform assistance program’s revenue by one third, then jumps up in almost the same breath, one must wonder whose brass is getting polished, at the expense of the Bahamian people. No one denies Freeport needs help. No one can argue that if no one steps up to the plate, then the government of The Bahamas must step up to the plate and assist the people of Freeport and Grans Bahama. Just hope they not getting pitched no curveball and getting strikes out. Which inning are they (your government) anyway?
Competition is good for the Bahamas, but is The Bahamas good for competition? And while Blackburn says Aliv is continuing to gather market share, he failed to mention Aliv’s profitability. If BTC is not profitable with 2/3 market share can Aliv be profitable with just 1/3? Maybe, depending on other factors including operating efficiencies, revenue from other products and overhead. BTC seems to have bypassed it’s opportunity to gain revenue from other streams as its tv product is a flop or close to being one. Many consumers complain that it is too expensive or not reliable. And Aliv’s cable is getting strong competition from online tv and other sources of streaming entertainment.
The ‘other ‘ claim is that this whale was cut open AFTER it expired and an autopsy was performed to determine cause of death ( parasitic infection). But even if this was the case, those who allegedly performed the autopsy should have contacted the relevant authorities to have the carcass properly disposed of.
So the government is being taken to task for continuing to collect duties from some merchants on items on which it has passed laws to make these items duty free once purchased from m the Bahamas. And since government no longer has the legal authority to collect these duties they are actually garnishments. And unless the government has intentions of applying these garnishments to other taxes a company may owe, they will have to return this revenue to the respective businesses once international bodies bare informed and become involved. When an idiot is appointed and tries to run a government financial department of which he has no experience, the results are not only more government revenue being lost or frittered away, but legitimate business seeking route to level the playing field as a matter of survival.
Well there are several factors that can lead to the reduction in the incidents of poisoning. 1. Persons are consuming less conch. 2. Persons are eating less from the affected areas. 3the dredging on the Eastern end of New Providence is complete. 4 While the works continue at the Malcolm Park sewerage plant the spillover of raw sewage into the seawater has stopped , at least for the time being. 5. Persons operating in the mostly affected area (Potters Cay) are following the advice of government officials and using more stringent food handling measures. 6 Many of the fishing boats that were docked at Potters Cay and dumping raw sewage into the water on a daily basis have gone out to sea with the start of the lobster season August 1.
The next few weeks are going to be a critical yardstick for the government to measure how the economy is performing. Vendors of back-to-school merchandise are already saying how much sales are down, below last year's, which was already itself a slow year. And once school opens, there is little economic activity until Thanksgiving in November. It is a critical time for businesses as is the following three months. The level of sales will determine if stores will make it into the new year with their doors open. Thus far even the shipping companies are reporting that their sales are down generally. Even a last minute Back-to-School sales rush may not be sufficient to bring sales up to last years' level. When you place excessive taxes on a particular industry or businesses, one opens doors and creates room for persons to operate by evading those taxes. So the government can, in reality, see less revenue than it saw before the increases. Cigarettes, for example, is a highly smuggled item because of its high tax rate and little measures of enforcement.
