The old post office is to be demolished but will be replaced by another building for government offices. The US Embassy is going across from it on East Street so maybe they will make provisions for a postal sub office in that building to avoid that long drive to Gladstone for rental boxes.
The cinema complex is supposed to turn a portion of Gladstone Road into a dual carriage way and government is supposed to complete it. They are also supposed to extend Soldier Road from Blue Hill Road all the way to the Airport. The work by the movie complex was supposed to be completed by now as that business is scheduled to open next month, which is also when the government is scheduled to start its roadworks . But the issue is how does this move fit in with Minnis ‘ plan to revitalize the inner cities. Will a post off substation be put in the area?
if the Drug problem in the Bahamas was like the the report indicates, don't you think The US would have deployed more resources here not now, rather than chasing the street corner, half bag dealer. The fact is because of its strategic location, The Bahamas will almost always be on that list. And it is a good reason for the country to be saturated with agents who operate here like they are on vacation. So let's see what happens with the relationship with the US and Canada when Canada fully legalizes marijuana later this year. let's see if they will be added to the list when weed starts to trickle across the Northern boarder. Friends and neighbors.
A young, black man in LA was shot twenty two times in his grandmothers backyard after police claimed he had a firearm. The only thing he had on him was a cell phone. The point is there are several levels of criminal activities that the police will not be able to prevent even if a police station was set up on every street corner in the Bahamas. But Bahamians expect to enjoy certain levels of safety and peace of mind. They do not expect to have over 100 young men gunned down and murdered even under The brightness of the sun. They do not expect to have another two dozen or so young men shot dead by the police and the explanation given i(by police) is completely different from that of eye witnesses. Domestic violence is difficult to patrol and it can explode and become deadly in a matter of seconds. And besides detection, apprehension and prosecution, what other initiatives has the minister of national security initiated to combat crime? The mini police tattoos in various communities, for example received very warm and positive responses, especially by the young and older residents of the community. But how to build on that now and create an even stronger bond between the police and the community? Then what about putting some retired police officers in schools where there is a shortage of male teachers. Not as police officers but in a classroom setting where they can interact with students, especially those from single family homes and give guidance and motivation and share life experiences. The fact is many young men don’t want to be in gangs or even a part of the criminal element. Most of them only need more positive direction in their lives. It is not impossible to get the murder count down to single digits...permanently.
Anyone who believes this report may as well eat garbage. If there was mass trafficking of illegal drugs as the report states then surely the country would not be in the economic condition it is in now. In fact one freighter intercepted off the coat of Florida earlier this year had more cocaine on it than all that was busted in the Bahamas for the entire year of 2017. This country has a greater problem with drug consumption rather than producing or trafficking. Then how can a country like America be growing, processing, distributing and consuming marijuana, yet call it illegal beyond its boarders? The lamb that speaks like a dragon.
Remember ‘hacking ‘ came about when there was only Bahamasair and, especially on holidays and weekends, confirmed passengers were bumped for politicians and friends. So the only way to get to their destination, which was Home for some, was to hire a ‘hacker.’ So now with the smaller airlines coming on stream, many consider these ‘hackers ‘ a nuisance, especially since they are perceived to be cutting into the profits of others. Maybe the time has come to license and regulate another category of aircraft, let’s call they are called ‘Air Taxis’. They will be single operators, smaller than a charter service, but fully licensed, regulated and insured. Forward thinking must include opportunities for the small man to make a dollar without having to operate on the fringes.
So in other words the court ruled that movie theaters must pay royalties every time a movie is shown. So when Galleria gets the movie, not do they pay the producers for showing it but also individual artists? Then where exactly is the line drawn. If individual artists, like actors are already paid for their part in the movie production. It gets tricky.
Can both of you ack like grown men? Sit behind closed doors, with referees if necessary, and iron out your differences. Battling in the media does not help either of you, your party or this country. Everyone deserves to be told iwhy they are fired and if an appointee is removed for reasons other than impropriety he/she is usually compensated by being offered another post, if only to avoid public speculation. But when you tell the press you, as prime minister, will never reveal all the reasons why you fired someone it says there were more than one reason and also that some of the reasons may be personal.
Come, Grand Bahama, let us worship our savior OBan. They won’t be taking you off on big ships (named Jesus) this time. They will be brothers big ships to you.
Let’s hope that these (OBan screw up and the firings) are growing pains in the learning and cleansing process towards better governance. But one really couldn’t rationalize Dr. Duane Sands alert on the shortage of essential drugs at the hospital. Was he trying to blame the former government or highlight the shortcomings of his own government?
