Imagine what the quality of life would be like when the sovereign fund becomes and the country starts collecting real and proper royalties from salt and aragonite, and fees in the millions from airlines that use our airspace. Imagine when cruise ships pay their proper share of taxes to bring taxes here and BPL converts to LNG and electricity bills fall by 30 percent at least. And the government gets it right with Oban and require them to a right portion of taxes. Imagine

Bahamians have tightened their belts and, like Americans, they have learned to count pennies and not leave them at the cashier or toss them in the parking lot. Many are living without light and cable and buying internet only on a need basis. The days of tossing out the furniture for new ones every Christmas are long gone or buying a new car just to attend a wedding. And with government plugging a lot of leaks in the system and seeking to produce more food the Bahamas is recession resistant.

Any efforts for Minnis and his government to revive and rebuild the inner cities must be accompanied be a corresponding increase in employment. If you rebuild and there is massive unemployment then destruction and decay will follow naturally. And if you give businesses motivation and incentives to invest in areas where there is no money, they are doomed to failure. And since many in the inner city can get employment on those projects, Minnis plan to start major infrastructural work is on point. However it must not be like the Ingraham Road Works project, where the work did not progress on schedule and this caused more damage to existing businesses that many never recovered and had to close down. And also the government has to ensure that there is sufficient activities in the economy so when projects are completed persons can find other employment and not have to go home and return to being idle. And as the economy starts to move government must seek to reduce the overburdened taxes on local Bahamians. The VAT was not designed to run concurrently with customs duties and some other taxes and hence its draw on the economy has caused contraction or made it deeper.

In the main time the trade war between China and the US sends ripples through the stock market. Facebook experiences it’s worse week in history. And more countries threaten to expel Russian diplomats in the wake of the alleged poisoning of former Russian spy and Donald Trump accuses China of stealing American intellectual property.

And there were also significant payouts to some of the restaurants and store owners who suffered significant damages due to flooding that resulted from shoddy plumbing work. Sarkis can strengthen his claim with these files or testimonies from these Bah Mar tenants but if the clause 9 prevents them from testifying then his fight is to get the records open. So now the Chinese must now decide to take a chance going to open court and having their dirty laundry aired or making Sarkis an offer that will make Sarkis take his mind of Bah Mar and go get shafted again. They may be looking at a $2 Billion settlement, half of which is Sarkis’ money anyway.

Most likely the agreement contained something to the effect that the contractor would correct all shoddy and defective work done under the previous contract at its own expense, provided the nature and defects remain confidential between said parties and not be made public (and definitely not to Sarkis. Hence the reason why he was forbidden to bid during the bankruptcy proceedings and was not given any materials to qualify to bid. And the sealed documents may also have something to the effect that any disputes arising in the project are to be resolved vis a vis mediation and/or arbitration as opposed to a public lawsuit. Agaothis is to protect the secrecy of the faults , defects and probable overpayments in the contract with Izmirlian.

Then some will say this can be considered discrimination against Haitians, since they make up the bulk of the maids and gardeners work force. Others say some employers will just pass the increase on to the workers putting them in a greater disposition. So Minnis’ can of open corned beef may not have been a corny joke after all. Looks like when this government finish with Bahamians they will not be able to afford a can of corned beef.
