Strangely enough of all 39 seats Perry Christie is the only person who lost by less than 100 hundred votes (The FNM won most of their seats by at least 1,000 votes1) Exceptions are Fred Mitchell in Fox Hill and Leslie (Potcake) miller in Tall Pines. So Perry Christie is the only one who even stands a chance of going to election court. Will he. and if it goes to a by-election he knows what will happen then! If it does get that far for a by-election, Perry Chrisitie will be even more soundly defeated!

When it was becoming apparent that Perry Christie and Bernard Nottage would both lose their seats, it was also clear that the PLP loss would be greater than usual and so putting it mildly I declared that the PLP was about to get the biggest spanking in its history of its existence. And as was evident in the polling results, the Bahamian electorate was not about to let neither the DNA, nor the independent candidates or the other fringe parties interfere with their decision to kick Perry Chrisite and the PLP to the curb. The decision was a clear and decisive one. The Victory for Hubert Minnis and the FNM was resounding and the loss for the PLP was crippling, humilating even deadly. (yes deadly, many who lost in this election are now politically dead and will never contest another political election, ever!) And Leslie Miller is more than hopeful when he says the PLP will rebound in a few days. Not so. He must remember that thousands of supporters flew the nest before disaster struck and they are now celebrating victory. And happily so. Those who are left are severely injured, emotionally they have been humiliated. . They are mentally crushed and physically exhausted. So there is going to be a disbanding of the PLP. they will be in the wilderness for a few years, struggling to regroup, struggling to find a leader with vision, direction and the power of cohesion to draw the party back together. The old guard will fall off. And if they don't regroup, and the DNA holds its course and Branville McCartney releases the strangle hold he has on that party, then the DNA can rise up and become the second force in this country..And of course the PLP may just fade away, because Bahamians do nottake too kindly to third parties or independent candidates. Perry Chrisite caused that, just as Lynden Pindling caused it before him.

@ Alex_Charles while poor people are the ones most dependent on government, they are also the ones that spurn the most economic activity, so they are the ones who keep the economy going. to jump of the top of your head and say to cut off urban renewal is both reckless and irresponsible. In many of these inner-communities, Urban Renewal is the only activity, and more importantly it serves as a beacon of hope for many young people. So when you can jump in your car and drive to the beach or to the movies or hop on a plane and go abroad on vacation, this is their only activity. Being poor is not a crime and the inner-cities are not responsible for most of the national debt This country has racked up. So why punish them by cutting their programs first? Except to be spiteful and vindictive and stupid? Not unlike Donald trump is being in the great United States

If The Chrisite government had dedicated the VAT tax to paying down the national debtas promised, the future will not look as bleak as it does now. One must realize that the more you go into debt with a fixed or limited revenue stream, the more difficult it is to climb out of that debt and pay it off. So The Minnis Administration may need to bite the bullet and commit to paying down the debt by at least $2 billion in the first two years of office. This may mean that a lot of programs and capital works may have to be delayed or even cancelled. The other alternative is to continue business as usual, continue borrowing and end up with an increased, national debt, reduced credit rating, inability to pay your bills, a possible devaluation of your currency and the IMF coming in and taking control of the country. This is the worst case scenario and there are 'in betweens'. For example if Minnis could grow and expand the economy and increase government's revenue, while at the same time paying down the debt, this would be a better option. If the government has to restort to increasing taxes this will be more damaging and can lead to more contraction in the economy and an eventual reduction in government revenue.

There will be a great falling off in the PLP party over the next few years. Many of the old guard will retire or otherwise release the reins of power and move off the scene. Many younger people will also 'disappear' as they have a difficult time dealing with this resounding defeat on the PLP, so they will not want to associate with that party, at least foe now. This can give Granville and the DNA the opportunity to move into the position of the official opposition and leave the reforming PLP as the third party. The only problem is the DNA was find out why, despite resoundly rejecting the PLP, the swing voter did not migrate to the DNA and even not to Granville himself. Public opinion is Granville is arrogant and so full of himself, he does not appeal to the common man and does not have the power or the desire to reach them. Some feel that Braille's little affair with Loretta Buttler_turner may have made him lose a lot of support, then a whole lot of votes. The whammy was double for Bran as he accepted a senate post from Turner without considering the consequences of the action, then he resigned just as abruptly, making him a more questionable leader. The numbers at the pols bear this out. So unless Granville can humble himself, lose the 'pretty boy only' image, release the 'apparent strangle hold he is perceived to have on the DNA and appeal to more PLP deserters, then he is wasting his time and his money. A third party or the independent candidate has no aooeal to the Bahamian electorate..so unless he get into the number two position he is easing his time.

Word is circulating that Glenn's Hanna-Martin lost her seat in the recount. If this is correct then the PLP has no seats in New Providence. WOW!

John says...

It is sad to see the number of gold rush shirts, caps and flags people have taken off and discarded in the streets. These things are so expensive. But even at the polls yesterday persons were refusing offers of PLP shirts and other stuff. At least give them away not throw them away. Do you realize this will be the last election shirt that has Perry's face or name on it. Do you think that maybe it will become a collectors item?

John says...

Well the PUNCH, the tribune, The Bahama Journal, The Nassau Guardian and The many Radio Stations made the most money as they ever made in any election in the Bahamas. probably the most money they made for any event in the Bahamas. Especially since special interest groups sponsored so many ads. Too bad for those who did work or ran ads on credit or promises to pay! Poor, broke ZNS.

I retract this statement as there are suggestions that there may have been some voting irregularities in Centerville. So let the chips fall where they may.

John says...

it will be interesting to see what happens in Centerville. Will Perry Christie contest his seat or will he accept defeat. If he does then maybe the FNM should just give it to him, So he can sit in the house and get some sleep
